Searching for Valentine gifts in Lima by AKtravelers The Inka markets in Miraflores have a wide variety of products from the Andes that are excellent souvenirs of Peru. After a while, many of the stuff in the shops looks the same. Still, there are some interesting things to be had, and we made plenty of purchases. I bought Andrea an interesting alpaca cape/scarf combo for Valentine's day at the shop in this picture. Andrea later found some excellent jewelry and a nice watercolor. On the whole, the vendors are extremely friendly and Sarah ended up exchanging e-mails with one. That adds to the pleasure of shopping here. Remember, you must bargain for everything. More than once, a shopkeeper muttered to me that andrea drives a hard deal.
Certainly, one should buy alpaca products, such as sweaters, capes and blankets-- they are very warm on cold damp nights. Silver is the local metal, and turquoise is also native of Peru, so look for jewelry with those combinations. A vendor in downtown Lima by AKtravelers We shopped in two ditinct areas of Lima. The first was in the shops around the Plaza de Armas in downtown and the second was at the Inka Market and nearby shops in Miraflores. Many times, the same items were cheaper downtown than in Miraflores. Probably because Miraflores has more money. Still, the Inka Market and other Peruvian malls in Miraflores have a greatyer variety and higher quality of Peruvian goods. We found an exquisite silver and coral necklace in Miraflors as well as an beautiful watercolor by an up-and-coming artist who wasabout to exhibit in Puerto Rico. On balance, things were much cheaper than they are in the U.S. and the price difference is about 5-20 soles (2-7 U.S. Dollars). In the end, it's not much to worry about. By the way, you should bargain for everything in these markets. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

Avenida Petit Thouars, where it meets the Av. Ricardo Palma (continuance of Av. Pardo towards Via Expresa), 2 blocks from the Ovalo-Parque Central/Parque Kennedy. Many souvenir shops gathered together. Walk the Petit Thouars for 3 to 5 blocks up (direction centre of Lima, you'll also pass by the post-office) and there are many. Maybe a little, but very little, more expensive than in the centre of Lima. From around 5 pm to 11 pm the Parque Kennedy has, in the middle a small local crafts market. Around Parque Kennedy many department stores (Ripley, Saga Falabella) and bars/ restaurants. Advantage here is that it's a relatively safe area. The shops in Larco Mar are much more expensive. Window-shopping and good for a drink/meal with a great view over the Pacific. Shopping Essentials Near Barranco there are two big supermarkets, Plaza Vea on Av. Republica de Panamá (taxi s/.3), and Metro in Chorrillos (taxi s/.4). For quality clothes, books, etc. try shopping in Miraflores. There is a Ripley´s convenience store on Schell in the corner of Parque Kennedy. Polvos Azules - Lima´s official black market - is a good place to find cheaper clothes, boots, music, cameras, etc. It is situated near downtown in the beginning of Via Expresa, on av. Grau. Another similar market, Gamarra, is situated in La Victoria. Arts & Crafts Souvenirs Best place to go shopping artesanía is Av. Petít Thouars between blocks 51 and 54, near Ovalo Miraflores. The street is lined with handicraft markets and smaller shops. For more expensive art, try shops around Av. Larco in Miraflores. There are also big craft markets on Av. La Marina y Sucre in Pueblo Libre (taxi s/.8 from Barranco). Mall Hopping in Lima Larcomar, overlooking the sea in Miraflores, is the most popular and central shopping centre. It hosts a range of chic shops, several restaurants and fast food places, a movie theatre, bowling and arcade halls and some of Lima´s most popular night clubs: Gotica, Aura and Mama Batata. Other big mall - Jockey Plaza - is situated in the richer residential suburb of Monterrico. Nothing cheap here and it gets really crowded here with shoppers on weekends. Just next here is the hipódromo de Monterrico, where horce races are held every weekend. Arts

This shop in Larcomar sells casual wear/outerwear, jeans, etc. in a similar fashion to the GAP in the US; however, this shop sells merchandise of assorted brands/name brands from the US or Peru. I got quite cold while I was in the area--at Larcomar--where it is located by the ocean. I did not bring a jacket with me, so I needed to buy something that will keep me warm. I ended up buying this comfortable Peruvian-made vest called "Aerographic" for about $45 (140 Soles). For the price, it can't be beat since it did its job and kept me warm the whole time.
Casual wear, jeans, warm clothing, sweaters, vests, shirts, etc.

Santa Isabel by chancay Sasnta Isabel is a discounter you find in evvery destrict of Lima various times. You´ll find there everything you need to live (food and beverage) to normally good prices, often surprisably cheaper than on the market...but this depends, you have to compare, at least you can confess a bit more in the quality sometimes. I saw this shop at the airport in Costa Rica also and I am not sure if Cafe Britt is designated as a duty-free shop in Latin America/South America. It is catered to tourists, foreigners, and visitors in the country, so the items you will find are for mainstream tastes with the associated mainstream prices. In my case, I had to stop by as I forgot some gift items during my tour of Peru. Among the many offerings are Peruvian cigars, arts/crafts, jewelry, souvenir t-shirts, postcards, other little trinkets, etc.
The sky is the limit!

souvenir at Inca market, Miroflores, Lima by travelife Very close to Miraflores roundabout you find a Inca market many different shops under a common roof (sorta Bazar arrangement)and there are few of them. But if you plan is to go to Cusco don spend money here. Prices go up 30-40% here understandably locating in a upper-class neighborhood. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft
