  • Right next to our hotel (mostly along Avenida Petit Thouars) there were a bunch of shops selling handicrafts and other gift items. We walked through here and saw lots of good stuff, but since it was the very beginning of our trip we didn't feel like carrying too much excess weight.

    Alpaca products, silver, etc.

  • At the end of Larco in Miraflores, you'll find a beautiful mall built into the cliffs overlooking the ocean. There are a few restaurants, a movie theater and plenty of shops here to occupy your time for a couple hours.

  • This shop in Larcomar sells casual wear/outerwear, jeans, etc. in a similar fashion to the GAP in the US; however, this shop sells merchandise of assorted brands/name brands from the US or Peru. I got quite cold while I was in the area--at Larcomar--where it is located by the ocean. I did not bring a jacket with me, so I needed to buy something that will keep me warm. I ended up buying this comfortable Peruvian-made vest called "Aerographic" for about $45 (140 Soles). For the price, it can't be beat since it did its job and kept me warm the whole time.

Casual wear, jeans, warm clothing, sweaters, vests, shirts, etc.

    Depends what you buy

    Calle Capon: Chinese Market Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • This walking street is full of Chinese shops and restaurants. Originally the Chinese people here are decendants of the slaves brought here for working on the farms (haciendas). Later have come others, too. We have to thank the Chinese for the great diversity of food in Peru, because they have brought their knowledge of making food here. On this streets there are some non-chinese food shops, too.

Here you have everything for eating. For small hunger you may have min paos with chica morala, which is chica made from specia corn, morado. Min pao is like pilmenies in Russia, but much bigger here.

on Ayacucho Street, close to the Congress Hall is the shopping center, where you may buy almost everything. Its a big area, where the sellers have their small or bigger shops. The imagination is not preventing the procucts sold here.

Mercado del Indios: Fantastic find for all your gifts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wasn't going to stop here wile in Peru, but I had some free time on my last day so I took a walk over and boy was I glad. This turned out to be my biggest shopping spree yet. I got everyone gifts here. It is a collection of stands/shops that sell everything imaginable. I

Because there are so many shops it is important to price shop first, look around and compare prices. You can also try haggeling.

Cafe Britt: Need to buy more gift items? Buy at the airport!

  • I saw this shop at the airport in Costa Rica also and I am not sure if Cafe Britt is designated as a duty-free shop in Latin America/South America. It is catered to tourists, foreigners, and visitors in the country, so the items you will find are for mainstream tastes with the associated mainstream prices. In my case, I had to stop by as I forgot some gift items during my tour of Peru. Among the many offerings are Peruvian cigars, arts/crafts, jewelry, souvenir t-shirts, postcards, other little trinkets, etc.

    The sky is the limit!

    Major savings on Handcrafts
If you are staying in Lima, the odds are you will be in Miraflores. Good shopping is in walking distance. If you are coming by cruise ship and not taking one of the tours, have a taxi take you to Miraflores (price about $20 USD). Skip the shops by the Marriott, pass up the ones on the main drag, by the park. There is a little section of town that has a bunch of little stalls and can save you as much as 75% from the shops on the main drag. Prices are negotiable. While American dollars & euros are accepted this is one place you want Sols in your pocket. Since street addresses are almost worthless to tourists walking about in a strange city, I’ll give you directions by landmarks. In the heart of town there is a big park. Find the Burger King facing it. With your back to Burger King, go to your right. You will see a big circle (run-about), turn right. Go a couple of blocks, and you will see a couple of larger Handcraft shops across the street. Cross the street, but skip the shops facing the street, about a block behind them is where you will find the deals. These buildings rent stalls to venders, as a rule the further back you go in the building, the better the deals.

Here you can pick up leather items, pottery, silver, gold, blankets, t-shirts, dolls…. you name it, they have it.

I was able to buy a leather purse for 20, small blanket for 12, ceramic vases for 10 each, a very large hand embroideried wall hanging for 120, leather covered photo books for 10. This is in local currency not dollars! As a general rule real prices are 25 to 30 percent less than marked.
