    We are not surfers, but from what everyone told us, the beaches around Lima are hot surfing destinations. In fact, one of the top surfers on the women's professional cicuit gre up surfing these beaches. I can't remember her Eastern European sounding name, but she is known by everyone in Lima as "La Gringa" even though she's a native Peruvian. In fact, she was named one of the top two most famous Peruvians this year -- the other being the Miss Universe winner. This surfing beach is right in Lima, below the cliffs of Miraflores. The water isn't very clean and my cousin got pretty cut up swimming unprotected here, but apparently the locals with the right equipment enjoy it -- there were around a hundred surfers in the water one Sunday.

    Lima is not an idillic place for Pacific Ocean beaches. Anyway, if you are in need, the best beaches in town are those in Miraflores and Barranco. They are black pebbles beaches, narrow and not very pleasant for sunbathing, as they get crowded in summer. For better beaches, you have to go out of Lima, like Punta Hermosa, San Bartolo, Pico Alto or Punta Rocas. Though there are public buses, hiring a car wuld be a good option for a daytrip there.

    Surfing is a rather popular activity here in Lima. Though I came here in autumn, I saw many surfers when I went to Miraflores beach. If you go for lunch to the Rosa Nautica restaurant, you will see them riding the waves from the terrace of the restaurant, a fabulous observation deck. If you don't want to enter the restaurant, you can go to the end of the pier and see the riders from there.
