Before venturing into the Andes to see Cusco, Mach Picchu and the Sacred Valley, a visit to the Museo de la Nacion will help put everything in context. Before I came to Peru, I was only vaguely aware that the Incas were the LAST of several sophisticated civilizations who were incredibly good artists and engineers. The art they left behind is not just a cultural curiosity, but is truly beautiful in its own right. Of course, most people are aware of the erotic art, and the Museo de la Nacion has a few examples of the type. It also has mumified Inca heads and examples of pottery from several civilizations. Unfortunately, it also has several exhibits that are replicas and not original, which is disappointing after visiting such places as the Louvre, Museii Vaticani or Taipei's National Palace Museum.

The parks are what make Miraflores great, in my opinion. The Park of Love (Parque del Amor) features some great, colorful tile walls and a great view. However, the park smells a little unpleasant. The Lighthouse Park (Parque el Faro) also has a great view from the cliff and offers a great seat for locals playing soccer.

The Church of San Francisco is one of the few buildings that predates Lima's 18th century earthquake, which alone makes it worth a visit. But its interior beauty also far surpasses that of Lima's cathedral. If you want to get an idea of what religious life was like during Spanish colonial times, this is the place to come. It's in a quaint square just down a few narrow streets from the Plaza de Armas.

In the centre of Parque Kennedy, next to the church, is an information booth of the Ayuntamiento de Miraflores (city council). (See picture). They have some very nice, and many not-touristic, excursions. They organise, for instance, an excursion to the presidential palace in the centre of Lima, (half day, take your passport!), a day-excursion to Chincha (the town, an old hacienda, lunch and a visit to a pisco factory), beach trips and much more. There is also a double-decked bus doing a one-hour tour of Miraflores and a morning tour to Pachacamac ruins. (The other excursions are in normal, comfortable buses). Their program changes every month so check with them when you're there. They also have a website, and look for Cultura y Turismo, click on turismo, visitas turisticas. Very nice and cheap and very good. It helps when you speak some Spanish though. Nevertheless it is really worthwhile to go with them. Well organised, on-time and very friendly. Few foreign tourists take their excellent tours. Really recommended! Info January 2007

  • Address: Miraflores Parque Kennedy
  • Directions: The info-booth next to the church, opposite the entrance of the Calle de las Pizzas. The stop of the Mirabus (as it's called now) has moved to a small office/shop on the Av. Petit Thouars, the second block coming from the Parque on the left hand side.

This wide pedestrian street is the main avenue in Lima, at least for tourists. It goes from San Martin square to Plaza de Armas and is all day and night busy and crowded (well, the photo was taken at 7am on a sunday!). There are many shops, bars and even old colonial buildings along the street. Is the place for souvenirs in case you are looking for that.

Once we got in (see Warnings and Dangers), we found the tour of the Peru's Presidential Palace to be interesting. Unfortunately (from my perspective, not that of the tour guide), the Palace was rebuilt after a 1920's fire by a variety of architects borrowing a variety of styles. How about some originality? For example, the room in the photo is modeled after the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Interestingly, it is used for the most important state functions and belatedly got air conditioning when they realized a small room full of hot-aired politicians gets, well, hot. It is the only room we toured that has air conditioning. If you're lucky enough to get a tour of the Palace (it takes some doing and planning ahead) make sure you look at Pisarro's coat of arms on the back of the chairs in the state dining room. They show an Incan with chains around his neck. By the way, President Toledo does not currently live here.

Barranco is a coastal district located in the very south east, below Miraflores. It has always been a "boheme" neighborhood, place for artists and special people. It is more relaxed and unspoiled than Miraflores, and not much further in fact. For me it is in fact a much better option for accomodation and even for more special restaurants and bars, as there are fewer cars and more pedestrian areas.

    District Of Miraflores: Miraflores Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • I can't remember the name. I've also heard it called the Miraflores Roundabout. It's on the on Av. Jose Pardo. It has a lovely park, some pretty building and promising markets. I watched some locals do some type of yoga in the shaded area in the park. There were dozens are artists selling their painting and the Cathedral was great. Not far from there was a local market (I felt a little conspicious with my light hair and skin) where I just plain absorbed the sights and smells (some not so great as others). An Inca market nearby was Artesanias Urin Huanca S.A.

On a weekend, Park Kennedy in Miraflores is a happening place to be. Artists are out selling their paintings, lovers are pecking at each other in the shade, children are playing on the swings and people are just enjoying their leisure time. On one weekend evening, a crowd was watching a dozen ballroom dancers waltz while, not far away, a colorful band of local musicians played Peruvian tunes.

Palacio De Gobierno: See the Changing of the Guard at the Palace

    The guard changes in Lima

Every day at noon, the guard at the palace changes, a ceremony based on the event at Buckingham Palace. But it a way, the ceremony in Peru is much more colorful. First, the bolivarist uniforms, with the plumed hats and bright colors, make a great spectacle. Secondly, the Peruvian guards employ a variety of steps/kicks to get themselves in position, including the highest-kicking goose steps I have ever seen. Furthermore, it will strike most anglophonic observers as odd that a martial band would play Simon and Garfunkel during such a serious ceremony! In fact, they are playing the song "El Condor Pasa", written by a Peruvian in the 1940's but borrowed by the American duo in the 1960's (it's amazing what you learn when you travel).
