San Francisco Church And Convent: Church of San Francisco
  • Tip Rating:
  • This baroque church with distinct Moorish influences survived earlier earthquakes but in 1970, it did not fare so well. Its restoration was so detailed and complete that it remains one of Lima's best examples of colonial architecture.

When in Lima, you cannot miss a Lima city tour. I remember going through all these wonderful sites during the tour: the old pre-Inca shrine--Huaca Huallamarca in San Isidro, San Isidro and Miraflores residential quarters, downtown Lima, Grand Bolivar hotel, Lima’s Plaza Mayor main square, the Presidential and Municipal Palaces, the Cathedral, the Museum of Religious Art, San Francisco church, Parque del Amor or Love Park, and "Larcomar"--the ocean-side mall.

I booked my city tour through City Discovery:

...and the price was right at $25 per person for about a 3 hour Lima City Tour.

    Monasterio de San Francisco
  • Tip Rating:
  • I took a guided tour to the catacombs, which was very interesting. Our guide spoke good English and knew very much about the monastery. There are remains of about 70.000 people in the catacombs. I was also impressed by the monastery's library but then I just love books and reading.

Plaza Mayor And Surroundings: Plaza Mayor in mist
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every morning after my breakfast i walked to Plaza Mayor. Every morning it was misty and it felt like it would begin to rain. It never did though. Around noon the sun was shining and it was nice and warm. Plaza Mayor is surrounded by beautiful and interesting buildings and is real heart of the city. Vendors come to you and try to sell their stuff but they are never too persistant. You tell them 'no' in firm tone and they leave you alone.

    District Of Miraflores: Paragliding!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Paragliding off the cliffs of Lima was one of the best highlights of my Peru trip. It was $40 to go tandem with an instructor. You can take your camera up and get some awesome pictures. Or, if your going with friends, ask to go up all at the same time so you can take pictures of each other in the air!

  • Directions: Parque Del Amor in Miraflores -- Look for a group of rugged extreme-sports looking guys on a lawn. One of these dudes will be able to take you up, and you can pay soles or dollars. You may have to wait around a bit if the winds aren't quite right.

Museos - Museums: Museo de la Nacion
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the Peruvian National Museum.

You won't see any contemporary history here, it is too controversial at this time. This is an exposition about prehispanic societies.

The history begins in the Archaic period and ends with the Inca Empire. There are temporal expositions about paintings, folk art, handcrafts, photography, etc.

If you need souvenir items, postcards, and general items for yourself--go to Larcomar. Not only do you get a gorgeous view of the ocean at this shopping complex, but you can also find a wonderful assortment of high quality ready-to-wear, scarves, jewelry as well as handicrafts. The prices tend to be higher than average as this mall offers upscale and trendy shops.

Around Lima: "Pisco Sour" Here I Come
  • Tip Rating:
  • You just cannot go to Peru and leave without trying their infamous cocktail drink of "pisco sour." No need to go to the actual place "Pisco" in Peru where this world-renowned drink got its name from, but just be sure to get it anywhere the locals tell you to.

While doing the city tour in Lima, we were told that the historic Grand Bolivar hotel in downtown Lima offers one of the best "pisco sour" around town. Wanting to seize the opportunity, I happily got my "pisco sour" on our quick stop at this hotel at 10 in the morning (I think it was too early for a drink) and by the time we got to the catacombs, I was feeling and walking like a zombie!!! :)

Plaza San Martin: A busy pedestrian street,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • A busy pedestrian street, Jirón de la Unión, connects the Plaza de Armas to the Plaza San Martín some six blocks to the south. The Plaza San Martín, surrounded by colonial-style buildings, represents the traditional commercial center of the city. Major hotels, airline offices, and businesses are located around the plaza,

  • A visit to this church and monastery is only 5 Soles and is well worth it. The church dates to 1674 and was my first introduction to "Lima Baroque" architecture, which I still don't really understand. However, I did enjoy seeing the carved portal and seeing the artwork throughout the monasteries many rooms, courtyards and stairways. I must admit that I was concerned about the preservation of much of the artwork and carvings, which are mostly just exposed to the elements and don't seem to be very well-maintained. Tours can be arranged in English, but we just followed along with the nearest guide who happened to be speaking Spanish. One of the best parts of the tour is going down underneath the structure into the catacombs where the bones of over 75,000 people are stacked in some interesting patterns (skulls, hipbones, femurs, etc. are all neatly stacked together in an eerie type of organization).
