Plaza Mayor And Surroundings, Lima
This is the bridge 'Puente de Piedra' over the river Rimac.
Water supply to the city is taken out from the river many miles east of the city. (see some notations in connection with Huachipa in my Peru page)
It is low water in the river when taking this picture.
The Plaza Mayor was created by Fransisco Pizarro.
On the sides of the plaza are:
- The Presidential Palace
- The Cathedral
- The Archbishop´s Palace
- The Municipality building.
Some years ago the plaza and surrounding streets were filled with merchants, but they have now been prohibited to be there.
The two-storey balconies and galleries have no connection with local tradition and are purely arbitrary. But the plaza still conservs some of its charm from the past.
The fountain in the middle is from 1650.
The place has also been called Plaza de Armas.
The first place to start any visit to this city is the 'Plaza Mayor' where you will find the major public buildings of the city, City Hall, Cathedral, President Palace, etc.
There is plenty to see in this area, and it is a wonderful point to start a visit not only to Lima, but to the rest of the country.
This 1897 building is worth a visit. Check out the great mail drop, and some of the historic items inside.
The Plaza Mayor is the heart of Lima and is home to the Palacio de Gobierna and the Cathedral of Lima. Most of the buildings were painted with a very unique gold with black trim.
Plaza de Mayor, or Plaza de Armas, is common meeting area situated in the center of Lima. The Catherdral, Predisental Palace and many old palaces have been built around the plaza.
