    The Barranco bus

If you have the hostel in Miraflores or Barranco, the chaepest way to get to the historical center is by public bus. There are several buses that follow the "Via Expresa" urban highway, so they go faster than normal ones. To catch one, just go walking to the Via Expresa, look for the bus stop and take it towards the north. In 15 minutes you will be at the center. 1,20 soles (0.30 cts of USD)

Taxis: Getting to "La Rosa Nautica" restaurant

    La Rosa Nautica

La Rosa Nautica is a nice seafood restaurant located in Miraflores beach. Looking at a map I thought: well, I take a bus to Miraflores, go walking to the beach and that's all. But no, mistake!
Miraflores is located ON TOP OF A CLIFF, so from the last houses of the seashore to the beach there is a labyrinth of stairs and passages, so it took me about 15 minutes to get to the beach.
Do, to return to the civilization I took a taxi (extremely cheap BTW).

My advice: take a taxi to go there, specially at night.

There is no municipal public transport from the airport (only the Urbanito private bus service, see tip above).
So if you wanna take a tax, here are the fares (in 2005):
    - Centre: 7.50 USD
    - Miraflores, Barranco...: 10 USD
    - Others: 14 USD

Ask always first to the driver if he is an official one and tell him to show you his license. Write down the plate number, just in case. I have no personal complaints about taxis in Lima but you can read scary stories about that in the forums...

If you wanna go from the airport to the centre, the most economical way is the Urbanito bus. It is a private shuttle that stops in:
    - Centre: 6 USD
    - Miraflores, Barranco: 8 USD
It is safe, but IT ONLY LEAVES WHEN FULL, so you might have to wait for very long to leave.
To buy a ticket, you will find a desk after passing customs, still inside the airport, at the right.

If you want to take it from the city to the airport, you can call them to their telephone number 5171893.

  • Lima airport Jorge Chavez - Lima
    Lima airport Jorge Chavez
    by nhoolb, 1 more photos
Lima airport Jorge Chavez has been completely renovated. It opened it's new facilities 2 february 2005, I arrived there on that day, the first day it was in operation.....In the depature lounge all is modern and efficient, roomy, gates with jetways, plenty of shops and a bar. Yes, a complete change from the years before....Now, in January 2009, also the immigration procedures when arriving have very much improved, no more waiting in line for 1 hour (not exaggerating!). All the previous misery is over now. But when you get outside it is still chaotic. Not only all the people waiting for their loved ones. That is latin custom, get used to that. In fact I think it is quite moving. But the taxis. Chaotic. (Bogota airport is much better organised in that aspect). Best is to have your hotel or someone you know to meet you.
I arrived (and departed) at (from) Lima airport from international and domestic flights many times.
Departing Lima internationally can sometimes be trysome. First the security/drugs checks, then the check-in. Long lines because there are only 3 or max. 4 check-in desks open. That happens with every airline, Iberia, KLM, Avianca, you name it. So that's not the airport's fault....
Look at my Peru-transportation page for info on domestic flights.

  • Abel Morante, who was my driver, drove me around and cautioned me about some dangers in Lima as well as ended up taking me to a local polloria en route to the airport, which I requested him to do. We broke bread at the "polloria" and had a fast dinner since I was trying to board a flight an hour after. His business card has this contact info:

    Abel Morante
    Phone#: 998225136
    E-mail: abel_morante42@hotmail.com

He provides a professional and courteous service as well as works very hard. I asked him if he takes visitors outside of the city, and he said yes. I guess you can negotiate a pre-fixed price for full day tours. Do give Abel's services a try when you're in Lima. You will not regret it.

The central area of Lima is fairly compact so you can get around on foot and taxis, when shared, can be a great alternative. The local buses seemed very confusing but sure it's easy enough to get to the more touristy areas of Miraflores and Barranco. We mostly had a tough time dodging them, especially to cross the street before the Parque de la Exposicion!

Driving in Lima is Only for the Corageous

  • THese minibuses are not considered safe - Lima
    THese minibuses are not
    considered safe
    by AKtravelers
The taxi ride from the airport should be enough to convince you that driving is only for the very corageous. Limenos seem to observe only one rule while driving -- wait a second after your light turns green because certainly someone is running their red light. After that it sdeems like a free for all, with lane markings and other directions apparently only placed on the roads for ornamentation.
Being in a taxi might not seem much safer, but at least these guys are professsionals with experience. You aren't.
As for he combos and mini-buses, they are not considered safe, either for the way they drive (we saw one almost tip over) or for what can appen to you during a crash (no seatbelts). Given the cheap prce of taxis, I recommend looking one over well (pick one with seat belts) and negotiating a good price, then getting in. Taxis come with the addeed bonus of a talkative driver who won't mind your minimal Spanish.

Combis Y Micros - Buses: Cheap transport

  • It's a fairly simple matter to find your way around the rest of this huge, spread-eagled city. Almost every corner of it is linked by a regular municipal bus service , known to everyone as El Bussing, with flat-rate tickets (around $0.2) bought from the driver as you board. In tandem with these are the privately owned microbuses , older and smaller, more colourful and equally crowded, but again with flat rates (25¢). Quickest of all Lima transport, combi colectivos race from one street corner to another along all the major arterial city roads. You'll see "Todo Arequipa" or "Todo Benavides", for example, chalked up on their windscreens, which indicates that the colectivo runs the whole length of Avenida Arequipa or Avenida Benavides. Colectivos dash dangerously fast, frequently crashing and speeding off before their passengers have got both feet into the vehicle, and might be anything from a ramshackle Dodge Coronet to a plush fifteen-seater minibus; wave one down from any corner and pay the flat fare (around $0.4) (1 sol )to the driver or fare collector. You can catch colectivos or buses to most parts of the city from Avenida Abancay. Taxis can be hailed on any street, and cost $2-4 to most central parts of the city. It's worth reiterating that driving in Lima is incredibly anarchic - it's not that fast, but it is assertive, with undertaking happening as often as overtaking and drivers, especially taxistas, finding gaps that don't appear to exist (one reason why there are so many damaged cars).
