Tap water...
... or anything that is in contact with it may get you "out of balance", it's apparently too hot in the water system thus causing bacterias and other nasty things to live and prosper!

Every City Has a Bad Area
Every city has it bad areas of town, and Lima is no different. Unfortunately the bad area of town will most likely be the first thing you see when you arrive. Think about it as a rule ship ports and airports have a tendency to bring down residential property value... people with money don't want to have to listen to the noise. Once you step outside the airport it's time to get your guard up. Keep belongs close. Most drivers will automatically lock the doors, but if your car doesn't have the air on, remember to keep your purse, camera and such in the middle of the back seat and to roll you window up a bit at the red lights. I haven't heard of any violent crime, but several locals have warned me about grab and runs in the area. It you aren't a seasoned traveler or a woman traveling solo, you might have your hotel send a driver for you. The average rate is $30 which is about $10 more than you would normally pay, but it can be money well spent. Let the hotel know what flight you are arriving on and the driver will be in the terminal waiting for you when you clear customs. This paid off for me on my last trip. We arrived 3 hours late, then I got a 'red light' in customs... another hour delay. By the time I cleared everything it was 2 am! My hotel driver was there waiting for me, and I was happy to see him.

Avoid the Carnivals
February is Carnival Month in Lima. During that month avoid walking in bad and medium-bad areas, and if you do go to those areas, be careful. Carnivals in Lima aren't like the ones in Venice. In Lima, they throw you water, paint (yes, with lead), white powder, and sometimes even pee. Why? I don't know. It's crazy. You see people with hoses, buckets, and balloons filled with water. Lima is a desert and water is scarce, but that doesn't stop them from wasting this precious element. Carnivals are celebrated on the weekends of February, specially on Sundays. So be very careful.

Watch out for the Gringos too!
I was approached repeatedly by the same person about 6 times over the course of three weeks with the same story - that he had left his wallet and passport on the train coming back from Macchu Picchu - and needed help calling the United States to get a new one issued, traveller's cheques cancelled etc. (Of course you'd want to help out a fellow traveller in distress - but think about it, why would you call the United States - when you should be contacting the US Embassy, as well as the train company first) The scam apparently is that when you go with him over to a payphone and pull your wallet out to get a phone card - the scam artist snatches your wallet and runs.

Tread lightly in the ocean
If you are walking in the ocean and you feel a biting or stabbing on your foot, you might have gotten stabbed by a ray. Have someone try to suck the venom out immediately so the pain will subside. If you can't do this, then try to get your hands on either hot water or something that you can burn and let smolder (dried poop works well). Get your puncture as close to the source of heat as possible and the pain should lesson - this may take 45-60 minutes. Be sure to eat something and rest for several hours afterwards. I didn't do this and paid the price shortly after. The fisherman said that if I had been stung on the top or back of my foot, then I would have passed out with pain. My pain only went up to my ankle, but it could travel up your entire leg. He also said that I was pretty strong for not crying because he knew grown fishermen who cried after being stabbed. The wound doesn't look very impressive, but the venom sure did cause pain. (for the whole story, see travelogue)

Excursions with local tour agents
If you speak Spanish, even not perfectly, you better go on excursions with a Spanish tour guide. All of the local tour agents have English tour guides, but most of them speak the English language with such a strong accent that is very difficult to understand. Especially if they are putting in some Quechua names into their explanations. Once we went on tours with Spanish guides, it was much more interesting!
