Shopping along the river
If you are on a tour, your guides will probably take you to one or more of the small villages along the river, and the local folks will be waiting with handicrafts. Buy something--they need the money, and they have some very nice things for sale. My purchases were in the village of Monte Alegre (pop. 120) I purchased a small oil painting on canvas (a river scene that I love) for $10 US, and two pairs of earrings for $3-4 each. One pair is made with canna lily seeds and colorful lucky beans; the other pair, with piranha teeth.
