Admire the giant water lilies. They only have a 4-month life—they grow for 2 months, live for another 2 months after they are fully-grown, and then die. Their stems are attached to the river floor. The underneath of the lily is purple (the color absorbs sunlight) and filled with air sacs for buoyancy. Supposedly, one of these giant water lilies can support the weight of a baby, but Jorge says it isn’t true. There are manatees in the river, although they are seldom seen, and they eat water lilies.

This is a small group tour that begins with a few days sightseeing in Lima, then spends a week on the Amazon, departing from Iquitos. The Arapaima—named for the Amazon’s largest fish—is a 24-passenger boat with a crew of 13. The boat is informal, cabins are small but adequate, and the food is good.We were accompanied by a tour guide (the whole time) and a naturalist during our time on the river. We went out several times a day (or night) in the skiff to explore places we couldn't go on the boat.We even had live music most evenings! Near Iquitos down the Amazon river there are jungle hotels where you can stay for a couple of days and make excursion in the jungle and on the river. It is an amazing scenery which you will enjoy to see.More info in my Iquito-page.
