I've never enjoyed birdwatching anymore than I did in the Tambopata rainforest area of Peru. Literally millions of exotic parrots and macaws are everywhere. I can hardly stand to see a caged macaw now that I've seen a mating pair of blue and gold macaws flying free and wild in the bright Peruvian sunshine.

Hearing millions of parrots and macaws calling to each other in the rainforest, as they approach a river bank "clay lick". (a place where they congregate and socialize each morning.) Please see my "not to be missed" section on Peru, too.

Be Ecologically Friendly to the River
A large part of responsible eco-tourism is the adage "Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints". When travelling in the Amazon, please respect the environment. Pack out any non-biodegradable waste (candy wrappers etc) and

While travelling to and from the eco-lodges, lunch and/or a snack may be provided. The food is usually wrapped in a large banana leaf - when you're finished, just toss the remaining food over the side.

    Taking closeup of the macaws
Our guide showed us how to take photos of the macaws by zooming the camer into the viewer in the binocular. A cool trick. The picture came out so so only.

    Pepe!
Pepe the howler monkey. He's the lodge mascot and a real friendly kinda monkey. Maybe he just wants you to get him a banana off one of the trees. He howls like an old truck starting up once or twice a day. We were warned that he did that but when I finally heard him do it I was at the other end of the lodge and I thought there was a hurricane coming. He's loud!
