I visited the Ukaka Restaurant in central Puno for the traditional Peruvian guinea pig, but it was not a good experience for me. The interior of the restaurant looked quite cosy with an open oven in the back of the room, but service and food was a big disappointment! Food was not served at the same time... I went there with two friends, and we ordered the same main dish, guinea pig. My friends got served first, and they were almost done eating when I received my plate! And the guinea pig was like rubber and tasted awful! Ukaka Restaurant is not a cheap restaurant, but service and food don't match the price. Order your guinea pig anywhere else than here…

This is a well-situated restaurant in the heart of Puno's bustling Lima street. The food is pretty mainstream and caters more to tourists and visitors of the area, but I remember the atmosphere to be warm. They seemed to be busy on the night I dined there and the diners were all tourists.
I think I had the fish for the day, which was a grilled "pejerrey" or kingfish. I liked my meal a lot.
Favorite Dish: The grilled kingfish with rice and vegetables was good. The flan was delicious!

Don't be fooled by the bar name, this is a small LOCAL'S cafe. Open for breakfast.
There is a full menu of omelets, sandwiches and entrees but why locals flock to it is its tamales.
1.50 soles, or .50 US. cents, per tamale. Its delicious. We were there on Sat. morning at 8 am and we ordered an omelette and a few tamales. While eating our breakfast, we realized this was a locals area when each person would go up and just order tons of tamles each.
Be careful though if you come on a Saturday. It is closed for lunch and dinner. We were very sad when we tried to go back for lunch and it was closed.

Ceviche is a local dish made of fish with lemon, onion... is really delicious though it might be a little strong for delicate stomachs. There are many popular restaurants in Puno that serve this. Those specialized in ceviches are called cevicherías.
The furthest you go from Main Street the cheaper the restaurant.

This is a famous touristy restaurant, located in the main street. Is popular for groups, so expect some noisy atmosphere if a big group is eating there.
The decoration is nice, dark woods and ochre colors.
Favorite Dish: Many typical Peru dishes. The cuy (Guinea pig) is delicious roasted.

The biggest grill steak I ever had! A little tough, but delicious. Quick service with beer. You may choose the beef yourself. Possibility to sit at table, using plate, knive and fork. Price together beer around 5 soles.

The best pisco sour in Puno. Also, chicha possible, but the waitress had to bring it from home. Extereme hospitality. Also possible to sit just before window to tune in the Lima Street (walking street) bustle.
Favorite Dish: Pisco sour. Served as appropriate cool, also fresh taste.

It has a great rustic and lively atmosphere, just perfect for returning from a long hike or excursion out to the islands of Lake Titicaca.
Favorite Dish: Pizza of course and though not a true and perfect pie, not a bad facsimile and one of the better ones I've had in South America. As a bonus they also served gluwein, which made Doreen very happy. It's a spiced wine served warm and was perfect for the chilly Puno nights.
