A trip to the beach
You can take a bus or taxi to a beach near Tacna. The closest beach is Boca del Rio which has lots of bars and restaurants and lots of people in the summer months when large concerts are held here. If you want a more peaceful setting I recommend to take the bus a bit further north where you can find the small town of Vila Vila and the more remote Punta Colorada beach which is in a fabulous location along the Panamerican highway. Here you can put up your own tent and enjoy an amazing scenery with impressive hills that make you think that you are on the moon or on another planet. When night falls and you sit at a bonfire under the stars you feel like a million miles away from home.
Visit the cathedral
Designed by Eiffel, the cathedral has a quite sparse interior (apart from the altar with the usual Spanish-style gold overflow).
All the windows are round. I don't think I have seen any similar design anywhere else.

Visit the train museum
You can walk to the museum in about ten minute from the centre of town. It's a very laid back museum with 2 big storerooms full of bits and pieces from stamps about trains to guard hats, train lamps, bits of engines etc...
Outside you get to see, touch and climb in old steam engines and carriages. There's also a lovely clock arch/bridge with a great view of teh twon and sand mountains from the top.
Very cheap, give a couple of soles to the friendly guard. If the door is locked, just knock or shout & said friendly guard will eventually appear & let you in.

Plaza de Armas
Must see in the middle of the city. We were there when a celebration of sorts ensued. Filled with all kinds of children in uniforms and parading around.
