Sex with minors and drugs

by flynboxes

Sex with minors in wrong anyway you look at it. You will see warnings against it as soon as you enter Peru and at most of the Tourist Info offices. Leave junior alone and get professional help.Drugs....Peru is 2nd? behind Colombia in Coke production. In addition to coke you can get grass and other stuff. I was offered weed in Miraflores and Cuzco. Not a good idea. The National Geographic Channel has the show "Locked up Abroad". It's real. When you are headed back home on your flight to the states or Europe you will see a man with a dog wandering around. If the dog sits down next to you or your bag....you got problems amigo. Travel is my drug and I don't need anything to enhance it.

Airport taxes

by flynboxes

Keep 6-10 bucks on you every time you fly in Peru. The airport tax is probably not included in your ticket price. Once you get your boarding pass you will need to pay the tax prior to heading thru security to get to the gates...You will even pay this in Cuzco. Kinda sucks but looking at the big picture..the airports in Peru are modern and clean for the most part and the tax I will assume keeps them so. The tax is only for departures. Paid it in both Lima and Cuzco.

LAN airline tickets in Peru - not so cheap now

by tonybowyer

Others have suggested buying tickets on the Peruvian version of the LAN site - well they have now outsmarted us. When I tried today it wanted a passport or ID - nationalities such as US/ UK etc were not on the usual country list - similarly for payment - only Peruvian bank issued cards were on the list. If you come from obscure or otherwise non-first world [sic!] countries you may be OK however the Turks & Cocos were listed for instance!! So I bit the bullet and am booking with Apurnake -at least it's somewhat cheaper than LAN and much better than the usual search sites - albeit fiddley as you have to email/fax your c/card details.Sorry!!T

The altitude sickness of Cuzco

by axelebert

Machu Picchu is only 2360m and not as high as Cuzco (3416m), so if you travel to Machu Picchu from Cuzco, as most people do, it would be even recommended to do so as relief from altitude sickness. Best of course to take few days in Cuzco for acclimatisation, especially if you fly in, then the area is more fun to explore. This stay was my first time I experienced altitude sickness, and the famous Coca herbs by the way did not help. I took it easy, spending most of the time just in the hotel room. Relax and be patient. take train from Cuzco for the visit. The ruins of Machu Picchu are spectacular of course.

Iquitos

by traveldave

With a population of about 490,000 inhabitants, Iquitos is the largest city and port in the upper Amazonian region. Completely surrounded by inaccessible rainforest for hundreds of miles, it is said to be the largest city in the world inaccessible by road. The only way to reach the city is by boat or airplane. Even through Iquitos is about 1,864 miles (3,000 kilometers) from the mouth of the Amazon River, its elevation is only 348 feet (106 meters) above sea level.Iquitos was founded as a mission in 1754 by the Jesuits at the confluence of the Amazon, Nanay, and Itaya rivers. The city was originally called San Pablo de los Nepenaños. However, the Iquitos Indian tribe inhabited the area at the time, and over time people started calling the settlement Iquitos and the name stuck.Over the decades, the population and economy of Iquitos grew slowly, but when it became the capital of Loreto...

The Altiplano

by iwys

The drive through the Altiplano from Cuzco to Puno is one of the most beautiful in the world. At its highest point the road reaches an altitude of 4435 m. The Altiplano is where the Andes are at their widest and it's the most extensive high plateau on earth after the Tibetan Plateau. It is flanked by snow-capped volcanoes and peaks.

Inca Trail Permit Availability

by risse73

The Inca Trail is highly regulated by the government of Peru and permits are limited in availability. There are a number of them set aside for visitors and the trekking staff (e.g., porters, guides, cooks, etc.), so plan accordingly. We booked our Inca Trail trek 5 months in advance and you need at least 5-6 months to do the pre-booking. You should book your space for the trek no later than April since that will enable you to do the trek by September, which is really the last month where the weather in that area of Peru works in your favor. After that, the Peruvian Andes gets cold & rainy. Inca Trail Walking Poles

by risse73

Metal-tipped walking poles are not allowed in the Inca Trail as it brings damage to the precious ancient path, however, rubber-tipped walking poles are allowed. You do not have to bring your own to Peru as there should be rentals offered through your trekking agency for an inexpensive fee (around $6 for a 4-day trek). I opted to buy one of the walking sticks because it is a novelty for me, and it turns out to work exceedingly well during my 4-day trek en route to Machu Picchu. It became a trusted object and I became quite attached to it after. You are allowed to bring it back with you, but make sure to have the airlines label/put it under the "oversized baggage" category. You better believe that I would not leave the airport in Boston as soon as I found out that it could not be located upon my arrival. It happened to be stuck in some corner of the air freight area and I ended waiting for...

Should you change Euros for Dollars?

by melosh

The exchange rate between Euros and Soles, compared to between Dollars and Soles should reflect the current strength of the Euro compared to the Dollar. It is essentially determined by the international markets. You do not need dollars to travel in Peru. You will be able to convert either Euros or Dollars directly into Soles in most places of exchange in Peru. Since you usually lose a little money each time you make an exchange you would lose money by first exchanging to dollars and then exchanging for Soles unless you have a special "beat the market" way to get dollars. (If you did and the advantage was big enough, you could take the dollars to Peru, buy soles and then buy Euros and come out ahead.)It is true that Peruvians are more familiar with dollars and many large items including higher priced hotels are often quoted in dollars. Where this is the case you can pay in soles, or use a...

Inca Trail Trek Agency

by risse73

There are many trekking agencies to choose from for your Inca Trail trek, but most are offshore companies that subcontract services to local Peruvian agencies, therefore avoiding local taxes that are critical to the survival of the country's economy. Peru Treks and Adventure is locally established and administered, thus paying taxes accordingly. They are a reputable company with socially/environmentally-sustainable practices. Also, they give a lot back to the communities from which many of their porters come from. I have been a direct witness to their humane and decent treatment of porters. Without reservation, I highly recommend Peru Treks and Adventure. I urge you to take a look at them for your future Inca Trail Trek adventure. For all of this, you can not only have a clean conscience and sleep well at night, but be very well satisfied with their competitive pricing and EXCELLENT...
