Lima

by traveldave

Visitors who go to Peru usually arrive in Lima, the country's capital and largest city. Most people only spend a short time here before heading to Cuzco, the Nazca Lines, Machu Picchu, or other more interesting sites. Lima was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro near where the Rímac River empties into the Pacific Ocean. He called his settlement Ciudad de los Reyes, or City of the Kings. However, the local Indian name, Lima, persisted and the city was eventually renamed. (Lima may come from the Aymara word lima-limaq meaning "yellow flower," or the Quechua word rímac meaning "talking").Lima soon became the most important city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. In the seventeenth century, the city flourished as the center of a Spanish trade network that extended to Europe and the Philippines. In 1821, Peru gained its independence from Spain, and Lima became the new...

Cuzco

by traveldave

Most travelers quickly bypass the urban chaos of Lima and head to Cuzco, which sits in the Andes highlands at an elevation of about 11,300 feet (3,444 meters). It was the capital of the Inca empire, and in their language means "Belly Button of the World." Nowadays, Cuzco is a fascinating mixture of the Spanish and Inca cultures. There are churches and other buildings from the Spanish colonial times, and large Inca building blocks are incorporated into many of the buildings. Overall, however, it is still an Inca town. Many of the people speak only Quechua, and the rainbow-colored Inca flag of Tahuantinsuyo (representing the four corners of the Inca Empire) flies from many of the buildings.

Diet Coke and Water

by Juyish

I would suggest if you are are feeling quesy start drinking diet coke or coke, don't drink the local water unless it has been bottled. The water in Peru has a lot of minerals that may play havoc on your system. Peru is beautiful, I would suggest Three to four days in Aguas Calenties to get to take advantage of the springs, hikes and historical sites in that area. Lima, this I would suggest two days because it is a pretty city which you can do with a tour guide and take on the sites from this city. Cuzco- two days in this city are good to explore and also can be a jumping board to other small cities, but overall this area has a lot of exploration waiting to be taken. This area is broken up into districts and the best way around here is going with someone that knows where to take you because it really is in the mountains and very townish. I would suggest a tour guide to get the most out of...

Cost of living (visiting)

by melosh

Costs do change from one year to the next. There is both "natural" inflation and the international exchange rate that can conspire to raise the visitor's cost of living. (Or perhaps, work to your favor.) Food and anything that is labor intensive will tend to be inexpensive in Peru. I would say food is about 30% the cost of the US and Europe (Gent) and perhaps 60% the cost of food in Buenos Aires. The cost of your food and lodging depends alot on your tastes and on the type of venue that makes you comfortable. If you insist on eating food as you might in BA, Europe or the USA you should also expect premium prices to get the same quality. Of course, location makes a difference as well with big cities (Lima) and prime tourist destinations (Cusco) having higher prices than other places in Peru. You can also expect higher rates during June and July when tourism peaks.I guess the main point is...

Wandering street merchants

by taxman707

I loved the kids that come up and try there best sales pitches. It is funny how all the paintings look like they are done by the same artist and dozens about kids and young adults are out trying to say they painted them and they go to art school. The first night in Cusco I had sat down on the doorstep of the hotel I was staying at and a boy about 7 or 8 came up to me and talked pretty good English. He showed me his so called art work. Gave me a whole spill about needing money to stay in school. His knowlege on the US presidents and our Calif Gov was amazing. I thought I would try out his art skill by giving him a pencil and asking him to draw one of the pictures he says he did on the inside of one of the cards. It was the cutest thing. He spent probably about a half hour drawing and erasing and redrawing. While the boy is drawing for me a guy finally won me over after I tried telling...

Border crossing to Bolivia

by kzapanta

Wow, what an adventure on our trip to Bolivia.Items worth writing for the benefit of our community:Don't trust whatever the salesstaff of the tourist buses say. Especially about having plenty of buses to choose from to return to catch your flight. LOL!There are no vehicles that pass one country to the next. You must get off the bus/vehicle, get all your possesions, check out of Peru thru Peru immigration, walk the 100 yards over the literal rope border on the bridge, check in at Bolivian immigration and hope you have transportation to continue your travels in the Bolivia side. All of which is a ton of fun and full of adventure. Supersize tip: Relevent for Immideate use! Cobacabanna, Bolivia is completely closed!!! No modes of transportation in our out of the town. Would have been nice to know in advance so here you go!

Lima

by turnip2000

I loved and hated Lima. It is great to be in a big city, but considering the amount of guards on every corner with machine guns one realizes that the city is far from safe. Tourists are generally fine if you just use your logic. Two or three days in Lima is really enough. The musuems are "so so" and the beach doubles as the city dump. I would suggest moving inland as soon as possible. Finding a surreal kid's Barney show in some restaraunt in Lima. kinda scary....
