Peruvian Experiences

by decoratordale

Seeing Machu Picchu was amazing. We travelled to Cuzco and spent some time there trying to get used to the elevation. Drinking the "tea" seemed to help somewhat, but visitors should be warned that this area is very very high in altitude and walking let alone climbing can be a real challenge to anyone who is not in great shape. We saw many people struggling to make it to an area where you could see the ruins. The steps are steep, but the views are fantastic.I had a medical emergency while in Cuzco and fortunately ended up in a private hospital with an English speaking doctor. I received better care in this hospital than I have in Canada. We spent a few days in an suburb of Lima that had a marvelous city square. The buildings and the wonderful plants that were in this square felt like we were in Spain. It is a very cosmopolitan city, and of course the Spanish language certainly helped to...

Inca Kola

by canuckmike

The one thing you will see just about anywhere in Peru is Inca Kola. Inca Kola is yellow cola beverage with a bubble gum taste that was launched in 1935. Peru is one of two countries in the world where Coca Cola is massively sold and is not the top drink thanks to Inca Kola. You see this everywhere as it is served in most eating establishments and it seems to be written on about half the buildings there. Also Inca Kola t-shirts a quite a common souvenir. Apparantly it comes in the largest bottling variations of any drink in the world at 21 different sizes (not including water of course). If you do not try Inca Kola when you are in Peru, you can't really say you have experienced Peru.

Fantastic misuse of the English Language

by mad4travel

You will find some endearingly charming misuses of the English Language while in Peru. Often on Menu and sometimes on tourist literature.Often mistakes occur because of too literal translation but others leave you thinking "What WERE they thinking"This I found in my hotel lobby. It is an ad for massageIt says: Excellent location to our city 1/2 squares of the square of wide and comfortable weapons massage rooms - say what????What image pops into your head when you read it (or is it just me with a dirty mind????) just what IS a wide and comfortable weapon??

Tiles

by SirRichard

In Lima and Cuzco you can find these beautiful old spanish tiles in most convents and churches. They are usually on walls around patios, forming nice patterns and adding a touch of color to these usually sober places.

Fruit

by SirRichard

If you love fruit (I do) when you visit Peru you must go to Central Markets. There you will find huge stalls with hundreds of different fruits, some known for me, some not so much, some "normal", some tropical. They are really cheap there and I used to have always 2 or 3 pieces in my sack just in case.

Churches

by SirRichard

Some of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Peru are churches and convents. Built in a Spanish tradition, these catholic temples are ofter richly decorated with gold and silver and most of them house interesting museums with baroc paintings and sculptures.

Say "Cheese"? No, say "Whiskey!"

by AKtravelers

In English, when we want someone to smile for a photograph, we ask them to say "Cheese!". In Peru (and possibly other Spanish-speaking countries), the analogous word is "Whiskey!". We learned this when we met this family from Cusco at the entrance of Machu Picchu. They wanted us to take their picture, and when we naturally instructed them to "Say Cheese!" they laughed and followed suit. Not only did they tell us that Peruvians say "Whiskey", but every time we crossed paths with them during the rest of the day, they would run us to us and say "cheese".

Picture taken from LArco Mar, a nice shopping center, much like in the U.S. something like an outdoors South Coast Plaza in Orange County. The picture shows La Costa Verde, the name of a beach in the Pacific Ocean.
