Culture and Religion

by tini58de

Peruvian music is almost entirely folk music, while its literature encompasses everything from independence-inspired polemic to the anarchic individualism of its many poets and the boyhood reveries of the internationally renowned author Mario Vargas Llosa. The main religion is Roman Catholicism, though the Indians, while outwardly Catholic, often blend Catholicism with traditional beliefs. Spanish is the main language. In the highlands, most Indians are bilingual, but speak Quechua as their mother tongue. There are about 70 other languages, and in remote parts of the Amazon, Spanish is rarely spoken. English is understood in major hotels and airline offices.Although the vast majority of the people is Roman Catholic, witchcraft is very popular and widespread. People succeed in combining the two religions. Just like there are fruitmarkets, there are witchcraft markets selling magic potions...

Peruvians are predominantly mestizo (of mixed Spanish and indigenous heritage) and Andean Indian, but the population is a true melting pot of ethnic groups. Significant minority groups of Afro-Peruvians (descendants of African slaves, living mainly in the coastal area south of Lima), immigrant Japanese and Chinese populations among the largest in South America, and smaller groups of European immigrants, including Italians and Germans, are among Peru's 28 million people. In the early days of the colony, Peruvian-born offspring of Spaniards were called criollos, though that term today refers mainly to coastal residents and Peruvian cuisine.Peru has, after Bolivia and Guatemala, the largest population by percentage of Amerindians in Latin America. Perhaps half the country lives in the sierra, or highlands, and most of these people, commonly called campesinos (peasants), live in either small...

Sacred valleys and sacred temples

by bertje

The most interesting thing in Peru is that whatever they tell you yuo have to use your own imagination and figure the most of it yourself! The sacred stuff is so unknown (even to them) that evrything is sacred even toilets and just holes in the ground! The reward you get when after (2 or 4 days) hiking you get to see the Macchu Picchu ruins from the sun gate at sunrise!

Iquitos.

by luiggi

Peru's largest jungle city and the Amazon Basin's largest settlement without road links, is connected to the outside world only by air and river. Founded in the 1750s by Jesuits, it would later become an oil and rubber boomtown. Iquitos' main attraction is as a civilized gateway to the Amazon and jumping-off point for jungle excursions.

Do some backpacking in the Cordillera Blanca

by richiecdisc

Though Peru has some great cities and an interesting indigenous population, for me it was the varied and beautiful terrain that drew me there. The Inca Trail was incredible but the Santa Cruz Trek in the Cordillera Blanca was what really turned my head. It would have been too easy to just stay in Lima for a night. It was a short five hour flight from Miami and with a five am arrival, I had decided to bypass a city that most travelers seem to hate, and make a beeline for the real reason for my travel to Peru, the Cordillera Blanca. After proudly bargaining a taxi down to $10 from the double asking price, we were whisked right to the bus terminal that services Huaraz, the gateway to Peru’s principal and admitted most beautiful mountain range. The breakfast on the plane had been minimal so after dropping off our backpacks at the terminal and buying our tickets, we headed out to the street...

Paracas and Ballestas Islands.

by luiggi

The Ballestas Islands are located one hour of shore of the Paracas Reservation, 240 Kilometers south of Lima. The best way to reach the Paracas Reservation is by road and of course in order to visit the Ballestas Islands, there are daily speed boats easily accesible in the Port of Paracas.

The CONCLUSION of MY FONDEST MEMORY

by richiecdisc

We happily made our way back to the bus with the feeling of passing our first baptism of fire in a strange new land. The bus trip was incredibly scenic, first passing huge dunes along the coast before cutting inland to the highlands and towns, which were hard to imagine as inhabited. The lunch stop was one such place and we opted for the smaller of two restaurants merely because the bus took us to the bigger one. The food was amazingly cheap and tasty enough. The owner sat at our table and asked us similar questions as the ones we answered earlier that morning and then offered us a beverage that evidently came with our meal. It was unfortunately cold and after one sip, obviously made with water of questionable quality. We good naturedly and unwisely drank the concoction and tried to think little about it. A couple weeks later, after a few bouts of diarrhea that came and went without...

Cusco, capital of the Andes

by B_Lacombe

Inca cultrue is the predominant distinct cultural influence that sets Peru apart and more so in the Cusco and Urubamba valley area where there are tons of Inca structures still remaining intacts. The mountains are breath-taking and incredible. Pictures cannot render the immensity of those nor the cultural richness that remains despite the globalisation of culture.
