Drinking custom

by melosh

In the Juli plaza on Lake Titicaca these dancers take a break and introduce me to the Andian beer drinking custom. (The men dressed in suits are also dancers.) One cup and a large bottle. You are first given the bottle, the giver empties the cup in kind of a toast, and then passes you the cup which you fill before passing the bottle on to the next drinker. You toast that drinker, pass on the cup and await the next bottle. Yes, there may be multiple bottles making the rounds so one quickly learns to only put a little into your cup each time. Staying sober at this altitude with the Peruvian generous attitude can be a challenge.

Famous Stone wall in Cusco

by asia1324

A localer told me to take a picture in front of this stone wall. I thought it was because he was an architect. But when I came back to US. I ordered a cusquenan beer at a peruvian restaruant and saw the stonewall as the label. And then when I saw motorcycle diaries they took a picture in front of it as well. Im glad he told me to take the pic! Its on the way upto San Blas which is a great part of Cusco. Grab a passion fruit drink from the Muse cafe and sit outside...the view is beautiful!

I didnt know anything about this stone wall but one of the localers I met told me to take a picture in front of it. I thought it was because he was an architect. When I came back to USA I ordered a Cusquenan beer from a peruvian restaurant and saw that the label had this wall on it. Even when I saw Motorcycle diaries they take a picture in front of it. So Im glad he made me take this picutre. Its on the way up to San Blas....which is very beautiful by the way. Have a drink at the Muse (passionfruit...yummy) .sit out side its a great view!

Cuy chacteado - Guinea pig from the oven

by CyrilHH

Not everyone's taste (though taste probably is the least obstacle - it is similar to rabbit) but you should definitely try it at least once. The one I had several days before looked fiercer than this one (it had very long teeth and came in one piece initially (before being chopped to pieces by the waiter on a side table) and was very crisply baked - somewhat like bavarian pork shanks.

Homosexuality is legal in Peru but you should be aware that social attitudes generally are fairly conservative. Any outward display of homosexual behaviour is likely to be frowned upon.An agreement on the border demarcation line with Ecuador was signed in 1998. However you should still exercise discretion in the border area and avoid taking photographs of anything of a military nature there and elsewhere within the country.

Usage of "ya"

by gt4715b

When you travel to Peru, you'll notice that the people here use "ya" a lot. It has many different usages, including "oh yeah" (ah ya), "here you go", "ok", etc. I found myself slipping into using it pretty quickly.

when you can't remember where the hell you shot a pic, the only thing you can do is to find something to say to justify its presence on your page and going on hoping that someone will show up saying 'huuu, I remember that church in xxxx'.I think it was in Puno....

the TIP, a really nice idea...

by utttz

the TIP, a really nice idea they had in Lima to prevent the exploitation of children in the 'begging business'. You can buy some coins, called 'tips', to give to the children begging in the street. Each tip can be exchanged for a meal but only a child can use it. When I was there, children asked directly for a tip. You can give it without worrying about 'grown ups' collecting all the money... it would be useless to them.upgrade 2004as it was a fantastic idea, it seems that TIP was dismissed a few years ago.

Best Pisco

by hartti

The best pisco is made manually by small producers. May I introduce Señor Antonio Castro Sosa, one of these producers who says: "With great care I have selected of my vineyards in Santa Cruz de Flores (Cañete, Lima), the best grapes of the variety Quebranta. After squeezing them and fermenting them, I have boiled its musts in pots of copper, distilling drop to drop this delicious pure pisco of 40 alcohol degrees. Personally I guarantee the quality of the content of this bottle."

Pisco Sour

by hartti

Pisco sour is perhaps the best cuisine I have met in Peru. There are several ways to make it, and the restaurants have competitions to have the best taste. Main components are lemon, sugar, egg, ice and pisco of course. The result when you taste it is like you had been in the paradise. Other fruit's juice or meat is possible, too. Here in the photo I'm preparing guanabana fruit for guanabana sour.
