Inca Trail Packing List

by butterfly_girl

The essential items for your trip on the Inca Trail are: Water, toilet paper, Headlamp & flashlight, rain jacket, thick socks, 2 pairs of comfortable walking shoes (worn in!), moist towelettes, warm sleeping clothes, 2 or 3 lightweight shirts that wick away moisture, 2 pairs of zip off pants (not cotton), a comfortable, sturdy backpack, a good water holder to strap around your waist, snacks, medicine in case of sickness, blister block, camera/film ( throw away panoramic is nice), 45 sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. I made the mistake of bringing too much. Once you start hiking, you don't have much time to go through your pack, so just bring the items that you absolutely need.

Bring Sunblock Please

by gt4715b

Travel light. Remember there exist these wonderful new inventions called laundrymats (lavandarías) and they are plentiful in Peru. Bring warm clothes as it can be chilly at high altitudes and during winter/spring. I found I was ok with 3 layers: an undershirt, a long sleeved thermal type shirt and a sweater. No need for a heavy coat for general traveling. Please bring sunblock. Not only is Peru located around 12-13 degrees latitude, most of the country is located at high altitude. You CANNOT use the temperature as a guide as to when to apply sunblock. It you're traveling from June - Sept. it's probable you'll be wearing long sleeves the majority of the time, so you'll only need to apply to your face, neck and hands. Be prepared to take lots of pictures, and as such bring lots of film if you have a special film that you like to use. There are tons of photo shops in the various cities...

Quechua Phrasebook

by canuckmike

If you are planning to get well off the beaten path or want to impress the local native population, bring a Quechua phrasebook. Quechua is the language of the Incas and is spoken through a good portion of Peru and other countries.

Moskitos, cameras and toilet paper

by epicult

If venturing into the Amazon (especially in wet season) be sure to have great waterproof gear! Not only great waterproof gear, but light coloured waterproof gear. Upon purchasing my brand spankin' new 'black' gore-tex jacket, I couldn't have kicked myself harder. And, being a seasoned Canadian backwoods guy, I should have known better.Black (dark colours) = many mosquitoesLight colours = far fewer mosquitoesDon't be foolish like myself unless you want to be sorrounded by 'hundreds' of these little critters!. Bring alot of toilet paper! Wrap your camera good as it is very humid in the jungle and it WILL reak havoc on your gear

Transformer for 220vac->110vac

by zzaappedd

Fill up your half empty bags with cloths and items to give as gifts. Lots of opportunities to donate them to poor people. Hat for high altitudes, where the sun will burn and you won't notice it because of the cool temperatures. And some sun lotion. If you come from a non 220vac country like USA, you better find a transformer for your battery charger. Unless you happen to have a multivoltage charger; in which case, let me know where you got it :) I bought my transformer in Cuzco at "HiF electronica" for 8 soles [$2.50]; which is a lot cheaper than in the US. But have them test it at the store before you leave. Flashlight for several caves and tunnels you will encounter. Get a hold of some strong plastic knife and forks since airport security will confiscate any metal utensils.
