I ALWAYS take a few tablets of an antibiotic CIPRO by Bayer. In the event I get gastrointestinal upset usually one table kills anything that your system is not accustomed to (there is good literature in medical journals about this). I also carry some other stomach medicine. CHECK with your physician and a travel specialist about shots you may feel more comfortable having. Since I stayed in Lima I could have done without shots but I took the typical defense in the event the opportunity arose to travel outside of Lima. Take a camera. I know how stupid that sounds but I got to Peru with three family members and realized I'd forgotten to pack my camera -- but here's the good news: I bought a nice automatic camera (Kodak) in Wong (the modern supermarket/mass-merchandiser of Lima) for a good price! I've used it until Jan. 2000 when it finally developed a problem. You can get nearly...

Resort Bring sunscreen especially if you are going to Lake Titticaca. I am not even very fair skinned yet it only takes minutes to burn on Lake Titticaca. The combination of the very high altitude the proximity to the equator and the reflection off the water will burn your face very fast.

Finally depending on how long you plan to stayed in the country, and which areas you will be visiting, you will need all kinds of different clothing for very changing weather conditions, it is relatively easy to reach altitudes of over 3,000 to 5,000 meters over sea level travelling in Perú.

You can rent every camping gear you like in peru, but I suggest to bring your own sleeping bag.... it can be useful also in some 'hotel' if you like to take pics.... make sure you're full of films as they are (were) quite expensive and you can find a nice spot avery step!

If you are doing the Inka Trail you better take some good walking boots or shoes, not slippery as it might be wet. These boots may be also useful in the north if you go to the jungle.
