Indio Feliz: Great food in Aguas Calientes

by sweetbean

Indio Feliz is a small bistro type restaurant located in the small tourist town of Aguas Calientes (a 30 minute bus ride to/from Machu Picchu). The style of cooking is Peruvian with a French twist. The food was very good, especially the soup (la criolla). According to some of the travel guides, this is the best restaurant in town, which would explain why it was packed full and all the other places only had a couple of people dining in them. Service was good and friendly. The criolla soup was very good, as was the Pineapple chicken and the Ginger chicken.

Tunupa: Dinner and a Show - fun time

by sweetbean

A traditional dinner and entertainment was included as part of our travel package. We had a great buffet style dinner at a restaurant called Tunupa. The food was all really good, and they will custom make ceviche for you too. The variety of food was very extensive and they had a lot of good desserts too. The staff was friendly and attentive and the ambience was very nice, sort of rustic. During the dinner, a traditional band played traditional Peruvian music and dancers came out and performed. The dancers appeared several times throughout the night and always had a different costume on. It was all very entertaining and a lot of fun. My favorite dish was the ceviche. I was able to choose exactly what I wanted in it and the server mixed it up for me. It was fresh and delicious.

Coca

by SirRichard

Coca is not cocaine. I mean, when you hear "coca" you think, oh drug, forbidden and so. No, coca plant leaf have always been well considered in this land back in the Inca times, when they used it as medicine and had an important social role. The problem is that part of that coca leaf go to produce the drug called cocaine :-((People in Peru chew coca leaf against altitude illness, as a way to fight tiredom... and you can buy it legally in markets and stores. You can find teas in cafeterias, or people chewing it by the streets... even candies made out of coca!

Corn

by SirRichard

Corn was born here, Incas had a great tradition in growing and using corn as food. In local markets you will find a wide variety of sizes, colors, species...You will find boiled corn in kernels sold by street vendors (they call it "choclo"), sweet, soft and cheap: 1sol (about 30 cents)Many dishes are made out of corn, specially the delicious corn soups, and you will find a lot of popcorn (huge variety here also) in streets and markets.

Maca

by SirRichard

I finally didn't try it, as I discovered it on my last days and didn't want to take chances, but many people seem to like this "spiritual" drink to begin the day properly. There are many street vendors offering this drink around, at least in Cuzco.More details in the web below:

Avocados

In Peru there is a great variety of fruits and veggies. I liked to buy a couple of avocados and keep them in the sack for in between hours. You just have to have a knife to open them and a small spoon to eat them.

Winay Huayna Hostel-Day 3 Inca Trail: An Oasis on the Inca Trail

by butterfly_girl

I had never walked 3 days to a bar before and no beer ever tasted so good as the Cusquena beer that I got at this little hostel/restaurant on the Inca Trail. After hiking up and down steep stairs...this little hostel was a blessing. The cloud covered views from this hostel are beautiful. All the sore and tired hikers are in celebration mode when they reach this destination!

Any Peruvian style restaurant: Try the Local Cuisine -- such as Guinea Pig

by AKtravelers

We were pleasantly surprised at how good the local cuisine can taste. We ate alpaca and guinea pig, tried products made from the local maize and enjoyed the wonderful fruits of the country (the mangoes are EXCELLENT!). You should get a restaurant recommendation from someone you trust and avoid eating at the cheapest places. Frankly, even the high-moderate end restaurant meals are so cheap in Peru that there's no reason to skimp on meals and good reason (i.e. digestive troubles) to not skimp. For example, a hearty meal of alpaca and vegetables can be about 24 soles or US$8.00. Add a beer or wine plus dessert and you're sated for a grand total of US$12 or thereabouts -- and this is with good-tasting quality food. As for a good place to get Guinea Pig, the traditional gourmet dish of the Incas, we liked the Inka Grill on Plaza de Armas in Cusco. Check out our Cusco page for more details.

Every place we went.: Andean Soups

by melosh

In the US I never order soup, but my friend who is something of a gourmet immediately upon arrival turned to the Andean soups for liquid and warmth, and discovered for us an experience which enriched our whole trip. All tasted of fresh herbs and spices. No two were the same. Often they included one of the over 200 varieties of potatoes. They seemed safe whether from the most humble dirt floor restaurant to the high class places with tablecloths and candles. I can not remember Peru without remembering the soups, but I can not pick a favorite. Just order "sopa", but hold off on ordering an entree, the soup may be all you need or want.
