Anyone ? N'importe lequel ?: Cusco : Calle Procuradores

by Maillekeul

The Procuradores street is filled up with restaurants and you'll be lucky if someone lets you choose (you will probably be assaulted by some young boys and girls praising the merits of this or that restaurant, even promising you 2 or 3 free drinks...).La rue Procuradores est pleine de restos et vous serez chanceux si on vous laisse choisir (vous serez probablement agresses par des jeunes garcons ou filles vantant les merites de tel ou tel resto et vous promettant meme 2 ou 3 verres gratos) We loved the pizzas, the truits or the milanesa... But the choice is wider...On a aime leurs pizzas, leurs truites ou leur milanesa... Mais le choix est bien plus large

Les Alpes: Cajamarca : Cheeeese ! Fromage !

by Maillekeul

Stef reporter is french, and, consequently, is addicted to good cheese. We did notfind any good cheese in Ecuador, but here, in Cajamarca, the production of cheese i very developped. We even found swiss ementhal ! Nevertheless, the local cheese is a bit heavy...Stef reporter, en bonne francaise, aime le fromage. Y en avait pas beaucoup en Equateur, mais a Cajamarca, on a ete servi ! Y avait meme de l'ementhal suisse. Toutefois, le fromage local est un peu lourd..

La Canasta: Arequipa : A good breakfast - Un bon p'tit-dej'

by Maillekeul

Breakfast very tasty about 6 soles (2 USD). The bread and some pastries are very tasty here. A bit awkward with the service (ask to see the portions of butter and marmelade they will give you before ordering : they try to make you pay if you want some more and often give you few...)P'tit dej bien goutu pour pas cher (6 soles). Le pain et les croissants valent le detour. Service un peu gauche (demandez a voir les portions de beurre et de confiture avant d'etre servis : ils font payer les supplements et ne donnent pas grand chose au debut)

L'Eau Vive: Excellent Dining and the profits go to the poor

by Alain_Smeets

The restaurant L'Eau Vive is located in an old colonial mansion across from the Torre Tagle Palace in central Lima, and the specialties are excellent international and French-country dishes. This restaurant is run by a French order of nuns. All the food is prepared by nuns and the profit from the restaurant is given to the local poor. And they finish the evening off with a chorus of Ave Maria. We went to this restaurant our last evening in Lima and Peru and this restaurant is an absolute plus, food and wine is superb, atmosphere is great and the profits go to the poor.

Temporary Pubs

by tini58de

There is this custom, that private persons may sell Chicha (during a fixed period of time? - I am not sure about that) without concession. All they have to do is to put out a sign - a pole with a red flag - to point out, that this is a temporary Chicha pub!So if you see a place with a Chicha flag out - do give it a try!! Personally, it was not my favorite at all, but I liked the thrill of trying!

Chicha

Peruvians everywhere drink chicha, a tangy, fermented brew made from maize and inherited from the Incas. Often served warm in huge glasses, it is unlikely to please the palates of most foreign visitors, though it's certainly worth a try if you come upon a small, informal place with the chicha flag flying in a rural village (literally--it means something akin to "fresh chicha available inside").I tried it once and decided, that this drink would not become my favorite - but it sure was an adventure!

La Bebida del Peru: Inca Kola

by tini58de

In the age of globalization, most product categories are dominated by global brands with the manufacturing, distributing and marketing powers in most countries. Occasionally, there are pockets of local resistance, where it is a matter of tradition and pride to prefer an essentially local product. Such is the case of the soft drink known as Inca Kola in Peru. Usually Coca Cola is my preferred travel beverage, but I am always open to try other things - and I absolutely got hooked on Inca Kola! It is so delicious and I can't wait to drink it again!!It has an intresting history to it, as well:Less than one hundred years ago, the Lindley family arrived from Great Britain to Lima Peru, and began producing soft drinks. In the beginning, the production was carried out by manually at the average rate of one minute per bottle of Inca Kola. In 1918, the family purchased their first semi-automatic...

Local Food

by tini58de

Peruvian cooking differs by region. Whilst potatoes, corn and rice are still the staples of everyday cuisine, the three varying climates each have their own influences on what is cooked. Along the costal region, as one might expect, the concentration is on seafood and shellfish with other favourites being kid and chicken. In the central highlands, a more substantial style of cooking prevails: meat served with rice or potatoes being the mainstay of the diet. In the Amazon jungle regions, the diet consists mainly of fish such as river trout, supplemented with tropical fruit and vegetables such as sweet potatoes and plantains. Wild boar, turtle, monkey and piranha fish are some of the more exotic ingredients used. A common ingredient used throughout Peru is Ají, a hot chili pepper which is used to spice up many dishes..
