Main square, Arequipa by mad4travel Arequipa is Peru's second largest city. It is often called the White city because it is built of white volcanic stone. The city is very close to the Misti Volcano which means it suffers earthquakes often (infact I was in bed early one morning when one shook my room- great fun!). If the volcano every decides to blow, these guys are toast! The main square in Araquipa is very pretty, very reminiscent of the main square in Antigua , Guatamala. It's a great place to people watch. Unfortunately its also a great place to demonstrate. When we were there they were burning tyres in the streets and generally not being too cheerful. The other great thing about Arequipa is that the dustman (man who collects the trash to you Americans) play the Lambada from their dustcarts, where else would they do that?? Also, there are lots of Llamagas trucks delivering gas to business and homes. So just how do you extract gas out of a Llama??? Leave a Comment

A popular after-dinner activity in jungle lodges is caiman spotting. The caiman themselves are not all that impressive (although they cry loudly, like ducks). However, the speedboat ride in the night is incredible. There are so many fireflies, it feels like you are speeding in space. And the night fish, maddened by the noise, tend to jump inside the boat, hitting you in the face, and it's your job to scoop them out back in the water. Leave a Comment

Descent Into Pisac by catalysta " climbed down the far side on a trail that trickled down through a canyon stepped with lovely waterfalls. The sound of pan pipes accompanied our climb down, so we spoke not at all, enchanted by the elusive music that sang of wind in the mountains. The sound grew stronger as we neared a ledge over a waterfall. There was our satyr, a young shepherd tending a flock of llamas, sheep, cattle & goats altogether, perched on a rock in his red ruana, smiling at us as we wandered by in a trance." Leave a Comment

The Clown In The Leather Mask by catalysta "...And 2 clowns in leather masks danced and whirled all around us. "The townspeople one by one went up to San Isidro to touch his sleeve or kiss his chuspah, asking for blessings and healings." "I was very sad to hear from Barbara that attendance was only half what it usually is, since there's been an 85% crop failure in the region due to the drought, and the people expect much hunger this year." The Women Of Taquile by catalysta "...I felt a very strong vibe about the wrongness of our intrusion upon Taquile, and so I regret going there. I'm tempted to write to the authors of the South American Handbook (my bible down here), and tell them that it's not yet too late if we left it alone starting today - but no one would listen, would they? After all, here I am too. "Just a couple more years and it will be an irretrievable sociological ruin." Leave a Comment

Room Of Mummy Bundles by catalysta "A room full of mummy bundles. Seems like a violation of the rights of the Dead. Each has been divested of all the possessions originally taken along to the grave (either by Peruano huaqueros, or scholarly collectors who aren?t much better), and then anonymously encased in glass. 'The signs had very little information, were worse than impersonal. Only a tag for each that said something like, 'Inca Mummy Bundle: Some are placed with another in a single case due to lack of space; however, this does not necessarily mean the two were found together.' That's all; what an epitaph." Leave a Comment

People In Manazo by catalysta "After the ceremony, we all marched behind San Ysidro following a very discordant Mariachi-style brass band, through the town and the farm fields, and up to a hill where a tarp had been erected to shade the saint. San Isidro was settled in under the tarp, and everyone assembled reverently for Mass. Leave a Comment

Los Marquesas Hotel by catalysta "As I finished working on the drawing of The Shark at a table in Cafe Victor, an Australian couple came in. I'd spent a sleepless couple of nights recently at a dubious hotel up the road, El Cahuide, so when I got to chatting with Jack & Josie, they recommended Los Marquesas. It's only 3000/s a night ($7.50) for a nice clean room w/private shower, secure and attractive. Ahora, yo voy." Leave a Comment

Women Of Manazo by catalysta "As an honored guest of Las Madres in a town where tourists never come, I was able to circulate freely and even take lots of pictures of the townspeople, so it was great fun. It's wonderful to be accepted completely for a change! A lot of the locals even mistakenly call me 'Madre' when addressing me, under the assumption any woman who visits the nuns must be one too, who else would bother to come to Manazo? Leave a Comment

Peruvian Harpist by catalysta "As the day went on, I saw several more blind musicians, all with the puffy eyes. I'm told they suffer from a form of malnutrition that causes blindness, and in the Andean cultures, it is common practice for the blind to become musicians. While those who beg with nothing to offer back are scorned by the locals (unless they are too infirm to do anything at all), the musicians hold a special place in everyone?s hearts. Even the impoverished little barefoot market women with bambinos on their backs drop a few coins in the cups of the blind minstrels." Leave a Comment
