May want to check out the Dephin Cruises. They have four day cruises up the Amazon. Several great lodges to be had in Iquitos. I personally liked the Muyuna, although it is a little further away from Iquitos. Be safe and enjoy. Leave a Comment

Hello Winter Travellers, What a great idea to run away from the winter!!. Well.... from December to March is what we call Summer time in Lima (highest:84F, lowest:70F, this is an average), February is the hottest month of the summer. Not always sunny days. But great weather for walk and get nice pics. As a native Peruvian & a Certified Peru Specialist based in Pittsburgh,PA, I recommend Arequipa as a third location. Arequipa has a lot of places to go, great food too!. Most of the times peruvian food is spicy hot and very tasty, you have the option to ask the waiter to have a mild/moderate seasoning. Do you know that Arequipa has the deepest Canyon in the world?, yes is the Colca Canyon and the Cotahuasi Canyon. And you will see the Condor flying. Very exciting! Any additional information feel free to contact me.ENJOY PERU is a great destination, and you have more places to visit within Peru. Let me know if you need more information. Regards. Leave a Comment

A flight over the Nazca Lines is one of the highlights of any trip to Peru. The lines cover an area of 500 sq km of arid plain. So far, more than 300 drawings, representing geometric figures, animals, plants and people, have been discovered The flight costs $50 per person and lasts about 30 minutes. There is a line of Cessnas waiting at Nazca airport. Each plane will not take off until it is full. I flew in a 4-seater Cessna with two other passengers. If you can, try to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the shadows make the lines easier to see and photograph. I flew in the middle of the day, when the sun was overhead, so my photographs are not that great. Don't worry which side of the plane you sit as the pilot will make two passes over each figure so that it can be seen from both sides. The pilot was really helpful and made sure that everyone saw all of the main figures, which are, flying in an anticlockwise direction from the airport: the Whale, Trapezoids, the Dog, the Monkey, the Hummingbird, the Condor, the Spider, the Iguana, the Tree , the Hands and the Astronaut. The ruins of the oldest civilization known in the Americas Caral and Casma, are about 3 and 6 hours north of Lima, respectively. Casma is on the coast so there is a nice beach there too. Its a nice day trip from Lima, I recommend the ceviche de pato (duck with sauce) in Casma. Good luck! Jenny www.karikuy.org Leave a Comment Address: Casma, Peru; Caral, Peru

This is truly one of the wonders of the world. The ruins are fantastic. But when you wonder how the Incas managed to build this grand city on a needle shaped mountain, it just boggles your imagination. Leave a Comment

Cusco is a Spanish colonial city built on the Inca capital. If you can visit only one place in Peru, this should be it. It is also the starting point for any trip to Machu Pichu. Leave a Comment

by traveldave The Amazon Canopy Walkway at the Amazon Conservatory of Tropical Studies is one of the largest canopy walkways in the world, with a total length of 1,700 feet (518 meters) and a maximum height of 115 feet (35 meters). The suspended walkway is anchored between 14 of the largest trees in the area, and there is a viewing platform built around each tree (best seen by enlarging the picture). The canopy walkway gives visitors a birds-eye view of the surrounding rainforest. Animal life is abundant in the canopy, which is one of the best places to observe jungle animals, reptiles, and birds. Occasionally, visitors can spot monkeys in the foliage below, and at the top of the walkway I noticed that there were lizards living on the tree branches. But it is birds that are the main attraction. Many birds in the Amazon Basin live their entire lives in the canopy of the forest and are very difficult to see from the ground. But at the top of the canopy walkway, these birds can be seen at eye level. The best times to visit the canopy walkway are early in the moning and late in the afternoon, as these are the times that the canopy birds and animals are most active. The climb to the top of the walkway is via gradually ascending suspended sections. This ensures that the ascent is not very strenuous. No special skills or equipment are needed to go up the walkway, although the suspended sections can be shaky and a sense of balance helps. And those with a fear of heights would likely have problems climbing to the top of the walkway. The Amazon Canopy Walkway is maintained by CONAPAC, a Peruvian conservation organization. CONAPAC employees guard the walkway at night to make sure that locals do not steal any of the rope, metal, or other parts of the walkway. Leave a Comment

by traveldave The Belén Market, also called the Belén Street Market or the Belén Indian Market, is a large, colorful, open-air street market that takes up several city blocks in downtown Iquitos. Different parts of the market specialize in different goods. Almost anything produced in the Amazon Basin can be found in the Belén Market, including exotic fruits and vegetables, animal skins and products, plants, medicines, and Indian arts and crafts. One of the most popular of the markets among tourists is "Medicine Lane" which takes up an entire block along Pasaje Paquito, and offers all sorts of medicines and remedies made from local plants. Also popular are the markets specializing in Indian arts and crafts such as jewelry, blowguns, bows and arrows, ceramic pottery, basketry, and carvings made from exotic woods, such as palo sangre. There is an abundance of food products in the Belén Market, most locally grown and produced. There are stands offering exotic fruits, fruit juices, vegetables, fresh and dried fish, and various kinds of meats, including turtle. Visitors can also buy grilled meat, fish, and vegetable snacks from street venders. One of the most disturbing parts of the market is the live animals. These are mostly primates and parrots which are caught in the rainforest to be sold locally, or exported illegally to the West in violation of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) treaty. by traveldave The Iron House, or Casa de Fierro in Spanish, is one of the most popular and recognizable attractions in Iquitos. Built during the rubber boom at the end of the nineteenth century, its walls, ceilings, and balcony are covered in sheets of iron. Architectural historians believe it is the first prefabricated building in the Americas. The Iron House was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the architect who is most famous for designing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The Iron House is therefore sometimes called the Casa Eiffel. The house was constructed at the Belgian workshop of Les Forjes D'Aisseau specifically for the International Exposition of Paris in 1889. There, it was bought by Peruvian rubber baron Anselmo del Aguila, who had the house dismantled and shipped up the Amazon River to Iquitos. It was reassembled at its present location in 1890. Nowadays, the Iron House is administered by the Clube Social de Iquitos, the group who restored it in the 1980s. There are now shops on the ground floor and a restaurant on the second floor. Leave a Comment Directions: The Iron House is at the corner of Putumayo and Tarapacá streets, just south of the Plaza de Armas in downtown Iquitos.
