Cuzquena Weaver (postcard) by catalysta "Wandered into the Museo Archaeologico today, and it turned out to be a great find! "...a display of miniature gold & silver figurines, wonderful pottery collection, and not only Inca textiles, but a room dedicated to the Paracas Peninsula, where the ancient pre-Columbian weavers were some of the finest that ever lived." The Blind Harp Player by catalysta 'Diseased beggars are not uncommon. Many street musicians are blind." Leave a Comment

A sad little burro by catalysta 'Am seeing much more than beauty and history in the streets now, and the poverty strains my heart. Backyards are often rubbish heaps, where barefoot children, dogs, pigs & chickens all root around together amidst the debris and broken bottles.' Leave a Comment

The Rubbish Heap by catalysta 'El Mercado' a profusion of dirty and poor Indians, with faces right our of National Geographic, but when you look at the ground around you, there you see all the filth and garbage that wasn't shown on the pages of NG. Babies crawl around in the filth beneath the stalls. Los ninos are everywhere, all wide-eyed innocence, but I watched one attempt to slash a tourist's bag with a razor blade, poised to catch whatever fell out. I yelled, 'Hey!', and he glared at me and ran off. 'Can't seem to get away from the acrid odor of urine, my eyes are burning.' Leave a Comment

Senorita, compra mi chaumpas by catalysta "I braved the market today for the first time, despite lingering issues with soroche (altitude sickness). This was really more of an olfactory experience than anything else, for my already weakened system: a combination of sweat, urine, leeks, kidneys (raw and cooked), and god knows what else. 'I was disappointed in the quality of craftsmanship when I looked over the woven goods, though there are some nice items I'd like to come back for. 'Everything is 'alpaca' (whether it's really llama or sheepswool, doesn't matter), 'antiqua', 'MUCHO trabajo' ('much work'), and 'muy barato' ('very cheap!') Leave a Comment

A Peruvian Man by catalysta "There are 2 very drunk locals below my window, howling and singing. In the book I read about the Indians of Otovalo, Ecuador (The Awakening Valley), it was mentioned that Sundays are the get-drunk days for the Indian men in Otovalo. I?m thinking it works for Cuzco too." Leave a Comment

Cuzquena Spinning Alpaca (postcard) by catalysta "The weather is sunny and temperate, perfect. I splurged for a hotel room right on the Plaza De Armas in the center of town for my first two nights here, with a balcony so I can sit out and watch the world go by. "A woman in the classic attire of Cuzquenas passes by beneath my perch, with a little girl dressed the same way, a miniature of her trotting behind." Leave a Comment

Bambino On Mama's Back by catalysta "Thus far the people seem pretty pleasant. Oh, they may pester you to use their taxis, buy their wares, let them carry your luggage, whatever, but they are polite and friendly, and really not that aggressive.' Leave a Comment

Manazo Town Square by catalysta AFTER NOTE: At this point in my trip, I decided it was time to put the camera, sketch pad and journal away, and quit seeing the world through a viewfinder. So the last week of my trip is a blur by now, though I do remember celebrating my departure back in Cuzco with a bunch of crazy Danes and a lot of Pisco Sours, and a subsequent rendezous with Jack & Josie in Miraflores, for a wild night on the town in Lima. So to Jack & Josie, Jane, Jutte & Mona & all their Danish compadres, Etsuko & Callum, and above all Las Madres, SALUD y vaya con dios! Leave a Comment

by Maillekeul Copacabana is in Bolivia but it's a real nice and peaceful place to enjoy the lake. The islands (of the sun and of the moon) are said to be less commercial than Taquile... And, believe me, the place is calm and cheap... Leave a Comment
