The Plaza de Armas in Cuzco

by traveldave

The Plaza de Armas is the center of modern Cuzco, just as it was once the center of Incan Cuzco, when it was called Huacaypata. Colonial buildings, which contain shops, restaurants, bars, and museums surround the plaza. On the northeastern side is the Cathedral, and on the southeastern side is La Compañía Church.

The Government Palace and Plaza Mayor

by traveldave

The 1,507-square-foot (140-square-meter) Plaza Mayor (formerly called the Plaza de Armas) is the heart of the colonial district of Lima. The Government Palace takes up one entire side of the Also called the Presidential Palace, the Government Palace was Francisco Pizarro's home, where he spent the last years of his life, and where he was assassinated in 1541. A uniformed presidential guard is on duty all day outside of the Government Palace, and the changing of the guard can be witnessed every day at 12:00 p.m. The oldest surviving structure in the Plaza Mayor is the bronze fountain, which dates from 1650.

Visit Uros,or versus Amantani and Taquili

by melosh

There are about 30 totora reed floating islands. Only about a half dozen are open for visits. These islands may seem artificially touristic to some. They are only a short distance from the dock at Puno. Amantani and Tequili are solid land islands that project out of the waters of Lake Titicaca. There are day and overnight cruises to Taquili, but Amantani being a bit further away does not lend itself to inclusion as part of a day cruise. Tequili has both a cooperative craft program and community restaurant. Different community members attend the stores on a rotating basis. The prices are set by the craftsmen on their work. The attending community member can freely negotiate the price on their own work, but are limited by parameters set by other workers on their work. Overall the prices seemed comparable to those seen in Puno at stores.

Go see the Condors Fly

by kathyceo

It is out of the way and requires an early morning drive to be ready, but when they begin to swoop and fly, it is marvelous...This is a trip that requires planning, we had a guide take us there. It's on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, but between 6-7 am peope just gather, suddenly folks are selling things, then quiet. The condors begin to fly. Everything stops for about 45 minutes as everyone watches and takes photos, then the birds disappear as though they knew it was a performance, and you don't see them until the next day!

Merits of Lake Titicaca & info for Galapagos

by Beckstar129

I think Nazca was an expensive disapointment and I would leave this out if you are pushed for time, Lake Titicaca is much better. The Nazca flight is short, very bumpy and there is nothing else to do in the area. I have a blog with pictures and descriptions of Lake Titicaca and Cusco so this might give you an idea as to whether it is your cup of tea or not. The homestay is a good experience, but very basic, so if you´re looking for luxury as it´s your honeymoon you won´t get it on this tour as you stay with a local family on Amantani.http://globetrottingbeckstar.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/puno-lake-titicaca-indigenous-island-living/ Take a 7 day cruise over a 5 day option in Galapagos, I´ve been told it´s amazing and if you are going soon lots of companies are doing discounts on cruises because its low season. I´m going on a boat called the Galapagos Odyssey in May, I booked it here and...

Lima

by chancay

the Capital of Peru, one of the biggest cities in Southamerica with more than 10 million inhabitants. LIma offers numerous excelent museums, for example the gold museum, a private expositon. Besides there are various fantastic churches, the cathedral of Lima is amazing big and so much gold!!!

Tip Photo
Puno - las islas flotantes

by chancay

las Islas de los Uros. This ethnic group flew from the Inca on artificial islands on the lake Titicaca where they still live 500 years later. All barcos and houses as the islands as well where made out of strew.

Machu Picchu

by richiecdisc

If you are in reasonably good health and have the desire to go to Machu Picchu, then by all means, don't take the train, do the four day Inca Trail and enjoy the scenery that leads up to the amazing ruins. All others take the train. ;)

Tip Photo
Peru's capital is underrated...

by richiecdisc

Lima is an underrated South American capital mostly due to people visiting during the coastal fog season when the city is entrenched in garua. When the sun is shining, its beautiful colonial buildings warrant a few days visit and its reputation as the culinary capital of South America is well deserved.

Tip Photo
Huaraz

by richiecdisc

Though ravaged by multiple earthquakes, Huaraz retains a air of friendliness that many other "tourist" towns seem to lack. It's the gateway to the Cordillera Blanca and for that alone, worth the visit.
