This sounds very unoriginal, but really Machu Picchu is the place to see in Peru. It's expensive to get (in) there, but worth all the effort.Outside the high season you can have the place to yourself. The mysterious settings and the serenity of the place make this the best place to see in Peru.

You must see the catacombs under the Cathredal. There the remains of over 30,000 have been carefully arranged. Just south of Lima (20 Km.)is a huge archealogical site, known as PACHACAMAC, well worth a visit if you are into archealogy. It's the history of the area that so compels a person to see more

Santa Catalina Convent, Arequipa.City within a city where nuns with servants lived for many years. It is a very well tended and peaceful place to walk around. The convent is still open but with far fewer nuns who are in a section that is not open to tours. They do run a snack bar with some pretty good desserts.

Museum of the Inquisition, Lima. This is where the Inquisition trials were held beginning in 1584. It ended in the early 19th century and the building then housed the Peruvian Senate. Interesting and slightly morbid place to learn about these trials. Wax figures help explain the various forms of torture.

This museum is famous for its gold collection, which has toured around the world. But their military arms and uniforms collection is also impressive and includes pieces from many countries, including Japan and the U.S.

I cannot imagine anyone touring Peru and not visiting Machu Picchu. Needless to say, it is a must see. Itis much bigger than I had imagined and even more isolated. Read up on it before you go, especially the poem by Pablo Neruda. It will help you appreciate what you see.

Massive ruins that really let you walk around and imagine the Inca world. A famous battle was also fought here when Manco Inca held back the Spanish in 1536. It is the second stop on the bus tour of the Sacred Valley.

Visit Lake Titicaca. At more than 3800 m. Lake T. is the highest navigable lake in the world. The lake and its surroundings are literally breathtaking and it is unbelievably blue. Also visit Amantani Island and visit the Pachatata and Pachamama (father and mother earth)monuments. Visiting Lake T. makes you appreciate the gifts of Pachamama. We stayed with a friendly local family. I had some trouble fitting with my long body into the bed, but HEY, travelling is all about adjusting, so I'm not complaining. If you want to have an idea of Amantani houses visit the page of VT member UTTTZ and look at the picture on his World page. (he's Italian, how tall can he be?)

Visit the Nazca Graveyards. Graverobbers opened up the graves of the Nazca Indians (500 DC). Because it never rains in this region, the bodies were well preserved and many of their ponchos remain. Please respect the dead though and leace their bones ontouched! It made me feel very uneasy to walk on the remains of Peru's ancestors.
