Getting Lost in the Amazon is one of the experiences that most hardcore travelers have on there 'things to do list'. Peru is a great place to start. Iquitos lies in northern Peru on the banks of the mighty river which flows onto Colombia and Brazil.

Hiking the Inca Trail/Machu Picchu. I don't know what to say if you travel all the way to Peru and don't visit MP. Be sure to go on the weekends when school is out. During certain times of the year, highschool students take field trips there and can really ruin your experience.

by warlord

Staying with a family on Isla Taquile (Lake Titicaca). Using Puno as a base, you can catch a boat out to Isla Taquile, visit the floating islands and stay with a local family in Taquile for about $1 per night. There is not much to do, but hanging out with the locals can be quite fun. The young boys are often eager to start up a football game. If you are able to make it there on a Sunday, they hold town meetings in the little plaza which can be quite intersting as the men argue about who is going to sew what design. It is a truly unique experience and a step back in time.

Getting a good look at the Nasca lines from a five seat plane is certainly an experience you dont want to repeat for a long time. In Nasca, there are lots of travel agencies that are more than glad to be of assictance with flight tickets, hotels etc. An eager, english speaking person convinced us on the bus from Ica that his company was the best, and since the price was what we expected (a little less than $50/person + visa fee), we accepted. We soon realised why every seat in the plane was equipped with a bag, and three out of four passengers made good use of it. In other words, if you despise sea sickeness, think twice before you enter that plane. However, seeing the Nasca lines in all their glory from above is quite a view. The guide an pilot points out the different figures, and depending on the route you can see the humming bird, the astronaut, the dog and all the other figures...

by HeidiR

lets face it there is one reason why people go to Peru and that is to hike the Inca trail.Hard work, you can either do a four day hike, in which case you have to climb 'dead womans pass'which is 4198m high (may suffer slightly from altitude sickness) and you will be sore the next day or you can do a 2 day hike where you skip this bit!

by ikohavi

The number one must see is the Machu Pichu (as I already mentioned before). There is a 4 day trek going in the 'INKA' trail. The walk is not too hard except for the second day which is a longer up-hill but not too terrible. On the 4th day you reach the Mach Pichu itself during sunrise - which is absolutly AMAZING!!!On the way you see amazing rain forests, great views and most important you see the history happening as you walk along: You see the Inca's villages (which are not as famous as the Machu Picu but were very exciting for me - see picture), you see their life style and everything. This tour is done with a guide - which is great because you get fabulous explanations if the guide is good. So check him out before you leave Cusco, if you can.

The Floating Islands of the Uros

The Floating Islands of the Uros are made out of local reeds and anchored with poles. I don't care what they call them: floating souvenir stands for example. The Uros craftsmanship with the native reeds is still amazing!
