Colca Canyon

I spent a few days in the Colca Canyon for a couple of days. It’s an amazing bus ride. I woke up just as we entered the Colca Canyon, which is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The vegetation is so different that you cannot compare them both. Watching the snow peaks as we entered the canyon was spectacular. Don't miss the mirador del Condor to see the animals fly over your head. Alas, Murphy's law 101: You will be indispose when a Condor flies above your head so don't expect a picture of one :). I remember I got to see 3 of them, 1 while I was taking a pizz...argh!

Arequipa

Arequipa is beautiful as large city comes. We saw the sites the next day. Since there was a major earthquake recently, many sites were closed down and were being restored. Therefore, I just got the same feeling as when I visited Puebla, Mexico, which also had a recent earthquake. I didn't spend that much time in Arequipa for this reason.

Nasca Lines

I took a flight on a 4-passenger Cesna aeroplane to see the Nasca lines. Seeing them from the air was amazing. On TV they always look so large and huge, but from the plane they looked small. It wasn't until I heard that each of the dozen lines I saw was over 100 feet that I was truly amazed. The Nasca lines were created by the Nasca civilization depicting several forms such us a whale, a monkey, a spider, a humming bird, a condor, a dog, a pair of hands, an astronaut, a parrot, etc. The most convincing theory to date, in my opinion, is the one suggesting the lines were used by shamans or priests on some sort of religious and drug induce journey on hot air balloons

I came to Huacachina expecting to stay at most one night and one day. My plan was to sand surf the sand dunes with a board for the morning and take a bus out to Nasca at night. Instead, I lost a part of my heart in this lovely oasis. I ended up staying three nights, but there could have easily been more.

Islas Ballestas

The Islas Ballestas is often known as the Galapagos of the poor, or so I've been told ;). The Islands are an interesting group of rock formations. In the islands, we got to see hundreds of sea lions, 2 penguins, and other birds native to the island. We took a clockwise tour of the islands and ended up at the maternity area were hundreds of sea lions gather to breed and give birth. Seeing the animals in their natural areas was awesome.

Chavin de Huantar

The ruins of Chavin de Huantar are amazing. According to the guide, the society of Chavin de Huantar was obsessed with the number 7. The main plaza measures 49 meters by 49 meters (perfect square of 7). Apparently, they got to measure the size of the Earth and from there calculated a measuring unit identical to the meter. I noticed that the plaza and the main temple are perfectly aligned to the north and south on each side. There are several interesting galleries and labyrinths on site as well. Intelligent and advance they where :).

Lake of Querococha

On the way to Chavin de Huantar, we stopped at the beautiful lake of Querococha, which lies at an altitude of 4000 meters. A few hundred meters later, we passed a Mountain with features that resemble a map of Peru. A few hours later we passed through the Cauisin tunnel at 4550 meters above sea level. This is a neat sight as well.

Pisco is a non-technical snowy peak. In normal situations is an easy peak. However, when you incorporate crazy Andy and me, well, then all hell brokes lose :). Read my travelogue for a description of the adventure and mis-adventure we had attempting to climb this peak.

Santa Cruz Trek

One of the best treks I have ever done in my life is the Santa Cruz Trek that is near Huaraz. The trek can be made in three days if rushed, but we did it in four by taking our time. I definitly reccommend a stop at Quebrada Arhuaycocha to view the amazing glacier. Check out my travelogue for a good description on the trek. Also, shop around town for supplies, maps, and if desired a mule.
