Ah, the beautiful city of Huaraz. Nested high in the Andes, this lovely town offers tons of attractions that could potentially keep you busy for several months or more. I spent about 2 weeks in the area treking, relaxing, and enjoying life.

Once in Casma, I visited the pre-Inca site of Sechin. The site itself is small enough you can walk around it in a few minutes. It took me longer, cause as luck had it; I spotted the rare desert fox. The site itself is nice. Its walls depict some sort of weird grueling battle in graphic detail. The characters actually remind me of Fred Flinston's costume when he went to his social club (jaba daba doo)!

I visited the Moche Pyramids of Huaca el Sol and Huaca la Luna during my stay near Trujillo. The paintings inside the Huanca la Luna Pyramid are beautiful. Apparently, they were buried and remained intact for hundreds of years until archeologist rediscover them.

Afterwards, we went to Tucume to see the allegedly largest adobe pyramid in the world. Sadly, it was really deteriorated. Besides, I had been to Cholula, Mexico and that is truly the largest adobe Pyramid in the world, if not by base alone.

Behold the massive adobe-walled city of Chan Chan. This was an amazing site that took off the negative thoughts I had on deteriorated adobe sites. Chan Chan is a huge site in scope. We saw so many beautiful carvings on its walls that is hard to tell which is the best. On a funny note, we were followed (more liked stocked) by a large group of high-hormone teenage schoolgirls that wanted a picture with the gringo boys :).

The impressive Bruning Archeological Museum at Lambayeque (30 minutes from Trujillo) turned out to be a very comprehensive museum. This museum contains the entire record of the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan as found in the site itself.

Kuelap is a spectacular pre-Inca walled city. What is impressive about this site is that it was build high on top a mountain so the cliffs were covered into a mighty wall/fortress system. The city is carefully constructed on top the fortress wall. The city had 3 entrances, of which only one was real, the others where fakes to trick the enemy. The people here made their houses with stones in a circular form and with hay roofs. It is really an interesting site with an excellent view of the area.

Upon entering Peru, I immediately made my way to Chachapoyas, a lovely Peruvian town that in my opinion could be developed to rival Cusco in the future. Sadly it doesn’t have much tourism infrastructure. Nevertheless, it is still worth exploring the sites nearby, especially Kuelap.

If you're into the wild side of things, take a 4 day trip into the amazon rainforest. We went to Manu nature reserve. It's not cheap if you go with a decent tour operator, but if you can afford it, go! Trekking through the forest a night on the way to search for Caimen is an experience not to be forgotten. p.s. take a lot of mossie repellant!!!

Much as everyone bangs on about the inca trail, it really is a must-do. The views from parts of the trail are breathtaking, and it's a real experience camping at such a high altitude. I was very nervous before doing it as I had been told how physically demanding it was. It's true, it is! However, if you're of average fitness, you'll make it, and feel a sense of achievement after the dreaded 'dead womans' pass'!
