pastaruri glacier

by katie-lou

not only is it an incredible drive to reach the glacier, passing lakes, mountains and funny high altitude pineapple plants, but the glacier is an awesome height. hire a horse to the bottom ( i walked, but half way up the horses looked like a really good option) then hike up the glacier for amazing views. sledge back down on blue plastic bags - what fun!!

by DaveOrlando

The Andes is the second highest range in the world, after the Himalayas, and the views along the Inca Trail are phenomenal. This photo is the approach to 'dead woman's pass' (origin unknown), the first and highest pass on the Inca Trail at 4,200 meters (13,800 feet). Hiking the trail from Km 82 on the rail line takes 3 days with a 2-hour walk early on the 4th day to reach Machu Picchu at dawn. The hike is moderately strenuous and, considering the altitude, should not be taken lightly. Spending a few days in Cuzco (3,500 meters / 11,500 feet) should acclimatize you sufficiently and provide a great opportunity to walk around Cuzco and tour the nearby 'Sacred Valley' which can be done in a day by bus.

The Inca Trail. You can get a four day hiking trip which includes all food, tents, sleeping mats and porters to carry your stuff, if you are lazy, for around $200. Definitely shop around, and don't go with these US$1500 deals. You still have to carry your own body up the hill, so how much better can it be. We went with a company called Q'enta (something very close to that). It meant hummingbird. I'll get back with the info. They were absolutely wonderful. The food was great and the porters were fantastic. Also, if you do the Amazon, don't, absolutely don't make reservations until you get there. We were quoted prices of up to $200/day/person. When we got there, it was magically $40/day/person. Bargain and shop around!!! Ride a barge to the lodge if you can, it is the world's most unique experience. Oh, we stayed at the Loving Light Lodge-first class stuff for a great price. The food was...

by Dany_Kulta

The Nazca Lines: one of the greatest archaeological puzzles in the world. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand are hundreds of straight lines, geometric shapes and pictures of animals and birds - and their patterns are only clearly visible from the air. They were built by a people called the Nasca- but why and how they created these wonders of the world has defied explanation.

You should go to see the Titicaca lake. It's the biggest highland lake in the world and it's really impressive. It's so big it seems like the sea. If you are there you should take a trip to the Taquile Island. It has become a bit touristy, but it's still worth to visit and to enjoy some food there.
