Isla Taquile

by canuckmike

Isla Taquile is an island located in Lake Titicaca that is a pleasant trip from Puno. This is a nice place to wonder around as it's very scenic and people like to wear wool caps. Of the real islands located in the vincinity, it's the busiet of them but still not a really busy place. There is a main town where there are some amenities and some ruins to wonder around. I only stayed for half a day because I was on a small tour of this island and Isla Amantani which is where I spent the night and Taquile was a stopover on the way back to land. I can though see why people can stay here for a couple of days.

Tip Photo
Aguas Calientes

by canuckmike

Well the main reason to visit this place is it's close approximate to Machu Picchu which is about 8 km away. Whether you did the Inca Trail and need a place to clean up and relax afterwards or you trained it in (this is where the train stops and drops of people on their way to Machu Picchu). It is obvious this place is designed for tourists. There is a vast choice of hotels, restaurants and cafes. Most of them are along the main road that goes up a hill thats fairly steep. Besides being the transit point of Machu Picchu, there are hotsprings here.

Machu Picchu

by iwys

Machu Picchu was definitely the highlight of my travels in Latin America and, in my opinion, it is the most stunning archaeological site in the world. For its setting and overall wow factor it puts places like the Pyramids and the Great Wall of China in the shade. Whether you hike the Inca Trail or come up by train, I'd recommend staying overnight in Aguas Calientes so that you can make an early start and arrive before the crowds gather. You'll need about 5 hours to see everything. The first bus up departs Aguas Calientes at 5.30am and the last one returns from Machu Picchu at 5.30pm. The site gets most crowded after 10am. Another reason to get there early is that cloud starts to descend in the afternoon, obscuring the view. Most people take their definitive Machu Picchu photo from a place called the Caretaker's Hut, which is up to your left after you walk through the entrance gate. It...

Museo Inka, Cuzco

by iwys

Museo Inka is not only a museum, but it is also a centre for local crafts. The fine colonial building which houses it was the palace of Admiral Maldonado and it is known as the Palacio del Almirante. If you haven't seen the famous elongated Inca skulls, this is a good place to see them. There are also fine Inca mummies on display here.Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Sat 9am-5pmAdmission: S/.10

Saqsaywaman

by iwys

Saqsaywaman is the first big Inca site you come to as you leave Cuzco to enter the Sacred Valley. It was a fortified complex and in 1536 it was the site of one of the major battles between the Incas and the invading Spanish conquistadores. It was designed to form the head of the puma of which Cuzco was the body.

Tip Photo
Cuzco Cathedral

by iwys

Cuzco's Gothic-Renaissance cathedral was built on the site of the palace of Inca Wiracocha. Work started in 1560, but it took more than a century to complete. The exciting thing for me about this place is that it was once the administrative centre of the Inca world.

Tip Photo
El Catador Pisco Bodega

by iwys

Pisco is Peru's national drink and Ica is the heart of pisco country. There are several bodegas around the town, where you can get a guided tour and see the vineyards as well as the fermentation and distillation process which transforms the grapes into a clear liquor. You can also sample the end product and purchase bottles of pisco and pre-mixed pisco sour. Pisco El Catador is, in my opinion, pretty good. There is a nice outdoor restaurant here too.

Tip Photo
Plaza de Armas, Arequipa

by iwys

Plaza de Armas is Arequipa's main square. It is dominated by the enormous cathedral. When I was there it was athe site of an anti-government demonstration, protesting about the strikers who'd been killed in clashes with the police the day before.

Tip Photo
Colca Canyon

by iwys

Colca Canyon is one of the world's deepest canyons and it's the place to go if you want to see an Andean Condor. It's best to go there when it's sunny as the condors don't fly when it's foggy or cloudy as there are no thermals for them to glide on and they can't see their prey. We had to wait a few hours for the cloud to clear and just as we were about to leave, we saw two glide past. On a fine sunny day you may see dozens, some of them very close up.

Tip Photo
Pisac

by iwys

The Inca citadel of Pisac is a great place to wander around and nowhere near as crowded as Ollantaytambo or Machu Picchu. It defended the Sacred Valley. The Inca agricultural terraces here are some of the most spectacular in Peru. Behind the fortress is a cliff face full of Inca tombs.Opening hours: 7am-6pmTo enter the ruins you need a Boleto Turistico.
