Especially the isles of Amantani and Taquille. Lots of culture there. This is a picture of Amantani. We stayed on Amantani with a local family (Borda). You eat the local food (potatoes and fish) and sleep in their beds (with matrasses of straw).

Machu Picchu of course is number one to visit in Peru, but not the only interesting place!Try to be up there early in the morning and you will have a fantastic scenery! Around noon time loads of tourists are coming up to Machu Picchu, as the train from Cusco arrives around 11.30 a.m. Moreover it starts getting quite hot up there around noon time, while in the morning you still have clouds passing by, so the view is changing constantly and it looks incredible!

Inca Trail. The best time to...

by ceciliagh

Inca Trail. The best time to walk at Inka Trail is in dry station, from May to September; but it doesn't mean that it won't rain. The Inka Trail was a Real Road. A real road, for example, united Qosqo and the four Suyos forming a 'net' that had among 10 to 25 thousand kms. Day 1: You'll know Patallaqta (an important inka population where walls of type 'pirka' and agricultural terraces still remain). Day 2: you'll reach the the Pass of Warmiwañuska (Dead Woman) at 4200 mts. Day 3: You'll know Runkuraqay (an archaeological group that has ovoidal form. This should have been a 'tanpu'), Sayaqmarka (an archaeological group located on the 3,500 mts with an administrative and ceremonial function), Phuyupatamarka (this place dominates visually a wide territory and should have been an important administrative and religious center) and Wiñaywayna (an important archaeological group next to...

visit Chinchero (Sacred Valley, near Cusco) It was founded in 1572. The church was built using as foundations the walls of stone that belonged to a great palace. There is a little museum here and a market on sundays.

visit Ollantaytambo (Sacred...

by ceciliagh

visit Ollantaytambo (Sacred Valley, near Cusco) It was a very important fortified city, built as 'tanpu' (the 'tanpus' offered lodging, feeding and comforts for travelers) and also to facilitate the control of the roads to the 'Antisuyo' (forest) and to protect the Qosqo from the attacks of the 'Antis'. As fortified city had some elements to protection: a wall with few entrances around the town, several 'pukaras' (forts) and watchtowers strategically located. The current town is on the same place where the urban sector in the Inkario was and it is the only place in Peru where some people live in the same contructions that served for housing to the noblemen of the Inkario.

by ceciliagh

visit Urubamba Valley, also known as Sacred Valley of Incas. At this place there were numerous prehispanic towns that reached a surprising domain of the techniques of hydraulic engineering. Actually, one can find archaeological places and agricultural fields. I hired the 'Compañía de Servicios Turísticos'. Adress: Portal de Comercio 141 Of. 2. Telefax 084 231515. email: ciotour's@telser.com.pe. The tour costed 10 dollars and you can do it TUE/THUR/SUN from 9 am to 6:30 pm. You'll visit: Pisaq Indian Market, Ollantaytambo, Urubamba (lunch) and Chinchero.

visit Museo Inka: Cuesta del Almirante 103, Cusco. Ticket: 5 soles. You'll find ceramics, facts about origin of Inkas and subsistence technology, inkan architecture, art, medicine, inkan tombs, etc. GREAT!(Picture: Next to Chinchero)

visit Sacsaywaman (near...

by ceciliagh

visit Sacsaywaman (near Cusco). Possibly its name is a deformation of 'Saqsauma' that derives of 'saqsa': marbled and 'uma': head, meaning 'marbled head'. When the Spanish conquerors arrived for the first time to these lands they didn't understand how the Peruvian 'Indians' could have built so much greatness...The construction began in 1438 and it was finished 50 years later. There were three walls built in different levels of stone of enormous dimensions. A block in the inferior wall has 8.5 meters of heigh and 190 tons. of weigh. Up to 1930 the neighbors of Qosqo, paying tiny quantities of money to the Municipality, took stones to build their housings.

visit the cathedral (Cusco)....

by ceciliagh

visit the cathedral (Cusco). It's one of the most remarkable colonial monuments in America. It communicates with the Victory Church (Iglesia del Triunfo) and the Sacred Family Church (Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia). Sacsaywaman was destroyed to build the cathedral with its stones. The Cathedral was finished in 1654, after 94 years.
