An awesome collection of pre-Columbian art and artifacts. Housed in a private home in the Miraflores suburb, the scope, presentation, and quality of these items are breathtaking. The owner, a somewhat nefarious character in his mid 70's whose origin and method of 'collecting' these objects are the subject of much debate and conjecture, conducts tours himself by appointment.
Founded in 1855 by several Lima gentlemen, Club Nacional is considered one of the ten best clubs in the world. The Club, characterized by colonial architecture, is located in the Plaza San Martin, one of the most beautiful and traditional squares in Lima. It now has over 1300 members and is the premier gentlemen's club in Peru. The Club boasts an extensive collection of works by contemporary and Peruvian artists.

These spectacular Inca ruins at 10,000 feet are simply awesome. Built originally in the 12th century and abandoned some 200 years later, they were not rediscovered until the 19th century. The Peruvian government now plans to dramatically increase the tourist capacity by installing cable cars. Get there quick before they're truly ruined again! Best views, if you can do it, are at dawn and dusk, before and after the main crowds are there.

Hike the Inca Trail !To avoid overcrowded trails & campgrounds, we started at lunch time. Leaving at a different hour has the advantage of being alone (or almost) on the trail. The campgrounds were almost empty (when I was there we had to share it we 2 other groups).According to our guide, about 300 people daily leave for the Inca Trail (off-season); During high season it is about 3000 people.

Hiking Tour of Colca Canyon, near ArequipaThis two day tour goes into the Colca Valley, passing through a national park where you can see Vicuna, Alpacas and Llamas, as well as a few flamingos. The road reached 4800m and there is a viewpoint where you can see 8 volcanos. It is possible to stay in Chivay and see the local women in their traditional dress which is very different from the dres worn elsewhere in Peru, and they all have special hats, and their own unique dances from the Valley. In the evening you can relax in some thermal baths under the stars! On the second day you rise early to watch Condors (amazing birds with a 3 meter wide wingspan) rising in the morning thermal air.
Arequipa is a beautiful City with great architecture. The Santa Catalina convent which has only recently (1970s) been opened to the public is beautiful and peaceful and you can spend a whole afternoon wandering around. Just opposite the convent is a museum relating to the Inca Mummies found in the nearby mountains including the famous 'Juanita'. They show an interesting video and a guide helps explain the different artefacts.
Islas Balleistas and Paracas PeninsularFrom Pisco you can arrange a tour to Islas Balleistas where you can see penguins, vultures, pelicans, sea lions, dolphins and other rare birds. The islands are shaped into arcs by erosion and inside you can hear the cries of the sealions which is kind of eerie.
The Gold Museum in Lima will leave you dizzy. It is spectacular!!!! Fair warning, though, there is a building that houses ancient pottery that will probably shock you. It is the most pornographic artwork you have ever seen. Beastiality........oral sex with Llamas........S&M.......threesomes........group sex including animals!!!! Don't say I didn't warn you. Outside the museum you will find very poor indigenous people selling something that looks like GOLD for mere pennies. They are selling Pyrite, also known as 'fools gold'. But, by all means, go ahead and buy a big chunk of Pyrite. It is beautiful and makes a great table ornament........and you will be helping to feed a family with this small purchase.
In all the years I lived in Peru I have never seen a tourist do this. But, if you have the time I highly recommend that you visit the countless beaches south of Lima. 43 kilometers south on the PanAmerican Highway is the beach called Silencio. Big waves and lots of beautiful Peruvians in shockingly tiny beachwear! You can hitch south very easily or simply hang around the Miraflores area of Lima and meet people who will tell you the easiest way to get to the beaches.........and probably invite you to go with them.SUNSCREEN!!!! Be extreeeeemely careful of the sun on the beaches of Peru. On a cloudy day in the middle of winter you can get the worst sunburn of your life in an hour! Trust me, I am not exaggerating. I learned the hard way that sunscreen is absolutely essential if you spend any time on the beach in Peru.
