Qorikancha (Convento de Santo Domingo), Cuzco

by iwys

Qorikancha was the most important temple in the Inca empire. Its name means golden courtyard and its walls were once covered with gold. The Spanish, who described it as the richest temple in the whole of the New World, dismantled the upper part of the temple and built a grand colonial church on its base. Today there is a museum inside highlighting what remains of the Inca temple, which was originally built in the fifteenth century. It is very interesting.Opening hours: Mon-Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 2-5pmAdmission: S/.10

Ollantaytambo

by iwys

Ollantaytambo is probably second only to Machu Picchu as one of Peru's greatest Inca sites. In fact, many consider it to be the finest surviving example of an Inca city. There is a stone citadel and temple complex on the mountainside overlooking the 700-year-old cobbled streets of the city on the valley floor. This is one of the few places where the Incas won a battle against the invading Spaniards. To enter the Inca site you need a Boleto Turistico, which is valid for the whole Sacred Valley. You can, however, see everything without paying, from the modern town, but not so close up.

Monasterio Santa Catalina, Arequipa

Monasterio Santa Catalina was founded in 1580, by a Spanish widow, as a convent for the daughters of wealthy Spanish families. It is a walled complex, full of attractive courtyards, plazas and passageways lined with the nuns' apartments.Opening hours: 9am-4pmAdmission: S/.30 (more than $10)

Archbishop's Palace, Lima

by iwys

The impressive Archbishop's Palace, with its beautiful wooden balconies, was built in 1924 although it looks much older. This is because Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski, the Polish Peruvian architect, designed it in colonial baroque style. It is still used as the residence of the Archbishop of Lima.

Palacio de Gobierno, Lima

by iwys

The Palacio de Gobierno is the heavily guarded president's palace. A changing of the guard ceremony takes place in front of it.The first ruler of Peru to live here was Francisco Pizarro, the founder of the city of Lima, in 1535. He is now buried just opposite in La Catedral de Lima. Pizarro's original palace was destroyed by a fire in 1921. The current palace was erected here in 1938, during the government of Mariscal Benavides. The architect was Ricardo De La Jara Malachoswsky, who designed it in colonial baroque style.

Chan Chan

by RobyG

5 km north of Trujillo there is the fabulous archeological site of Chan Chan. Built by the Chimor between the 850 and the 1470 a.c. it was the imperial capital of the Kingdom of the Chimu' before to be conquered by the Inca. Covering an area of 20 square km the place include ceremonial rooms, burial chambers, temples, reservoirs but everything in adobe bricks.

Tip Photo
Museo de la Nación, Lima

by iwys

After the fabulous Museo Larco, Lima's Museo de la Nación comes as something of a disappointment so probably best do what I did and see it first. The first impression you get as you approach the massive building that houses it is that it's probably the biggest museum in the world. It's not. 90% of the building is empty. The permanent exhibtion just covers one floor and there is another floor used by temporary exhibitions: the one at the time I was there was photographs of atrocities.Opening hours: Tue-Sun 9am-6pm

Surfing in Mancora

by RobyG

Mancora, at the very top of the country (close to the border with Equador) is a very small village on the beach with several hostels, internet access, good local restaurants, very peacefull and quite place. For the lovers of Surf this place offers good waves (not huge but you still have fun), and for the beginners few surf school are available.

Tip Photo
Huaca Pucllana, Lima

by iwys

Huaca Pucllana is a Lima culture adobe brick pyramid built in 400 AD. It is a bit older than Huaca Huallamarca and in poorer or, depending on your perspective, more original condition. it was a major administrative and ceremonial centre of the Lima people.Opening hours: Wed-Mon 9am-5pmAdmission: S/.7

San Pedro cactus

by RobyG

From the city of Cuzco you can experience the adventure to follow a Shaman which has a long tradition in South America and stay with him for a certain time ( aminimum of 4 days is suggested). The "San Pedro" Cactus will be served during an intensive ceremony that helps its digestion and drive the effect on.Another vegetal extract that may take part in a different ceremony is named Ayahuasca, very common to different religious sects of South America in order to reach or at least to feel more part of the nature and the environment around you. The effect of these experiences are extremely related to your own character, so even listening to other people's stories it wouldn't help much to discover what it may happens to you.I can simply garantee that no risks are involved in this, and be sure that you're doing somenthing you will never forget.
