So Many tours from Cuzco

by RobyG

Cuzco is the most developed city for tourism as from there you can easily book the most renowned tours that you can do in Peru'. Inca Trail: though you need to book it in advance, at some time of the year it is still possible to book it from Cuzco (but at least 20 days before) and it's much cheaper than reserving it from Europe or the States.Alternatives to arrive to Machu Picchu are many: Jungle tour is 3 days (ciclying, hiking) that drives you direct on the last day the gigant rouin.

Museo Larco, Lima

by iwys

Museo Larco was the best museum I visited in my travels around South America. Admission is expensive, but, if you can afford it, it's definitely worth it. Founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle in 1926, it houses the finest collection of pre-Columbian art in the world, including some superb gold and silver jewellery and the famous gallery of erotic art. Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday: 9am - 6pm.Admission: adults S/. 30.00, senior citizens (65 and over) S/. 25.00,students & children under 15 S/. 15.00

Inca Trek with SAS Travel

by iammon

We did it with SAS Travel and really loved it. The company seems to be very professional. The guide was great. Very friendly and helpful and the knowledge about the incas and fauna/flora was big. The food they served us is unforgettable...my mouth still waters when I think about it. They prepared it with so much love as well. While on trek you can compare with other tours and I think SAS Travel is better than average (they won some awards as well in 2005 and 2007). It's maybe a bit more expensive than others but we though they treat their crew better than others as well.

LIMA : PLAZA DE ARMAS AND SURROUNDING

by swesn

The Plaza de Armas (also known as Plaza Mayor) of Lima is a World Heritage Site, declared by UNESCO. Along its two sides, there are arcades with shops - Portal de Escribanos and Portal de Botoneros. The surrounding buildings are of lovely colonial architecture with wooden balconies and grilled ornate windows. The Cathedral was reduced to rubble during an earthquake in the 1700s. This is a reconstruction with amazing silver-covered altars, fine woodwork, walls of intricate mosaic designs.San Francisco, on the other hand, withstood the same earthquake. This monastery is famous for the tilework and ceiling in the cloisters. There are interesting catacombs under the church that can be visited. There are many other buildings that visitors can admire. They include the Palacio Torre Tagle (Jr Ucayali 363), Casa Aliaga (Union 224), Casa de la Rada (Jr Ucayali 358), San Pedro (Jr Ucayali),...

LIMA : MIRAFLORES

by swesn

Miraflores is the social hub of Lima. There are many hostels and restaurants here, and is considered a relatively safer neighbourhood for tourists to wander around late at night.Parque Kennedy has a small open-air theatre with performances every Thursday to Sunday. There is a handicraft market most evenings.More blinking neon lights can be found at Centro Comercial Larcomar, a very modern shopping mall. There are expensive chic shops, hip cafes and hot discos. There is also a row of restaurants of all types of cuisine for the cosmopolitans to choose from.

LIMA : BARRANCO

by swesn

This southern suburb is a very charming seaside resort. When you reach the centre, you can't help but admire the quaint colonial and colourful buildings, with the quiet charm of an artistic town. The public library now stands on the plaza. It is an attractive building. There are some paths that can lead one down to the beach. Or you may be able to find some restaurants that sit right on the edge of the cliff, offering you a magnificent view of the Pacific. It is quite quiet by day, but at night, the suburb comes alive around the bars and restaurants near the plaza.

PUNO : SILLUSTANI

by swesn

Not far from Puno, Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial sit by Lake Umayo. The tombs are not underground, they are built in tower-like structures called chullpas. These were the Colla people, Aymara who were conquered by the Inca in the 1400s. The structures were probably for noble families. Unfortunately, many of the tombs have been blown opened by dynamites by grave robbers. Some were left unfinished, with a ramp still by its side to raise blocks. In the interior, the design is like a woman's uterus. Corpses were mummified in a fetal position to recreate their birth. Lizards are a favourite motif because they can grow their tails again, and so were considered a symbol of life. As such, they are carved onto the walls of the stone blocks. The scenery is impressive, everything looks barren and it can get quite windy. Join an organised tour from Puno.

LAGO TITICACA : ISLA TAQUILE / ISLA AMANTANI

by swesn

Isla Taquile is an island 45km from Puno located in Lago Titicaca. It is merely 1km wide and 6-7km long. There are some pre-Inca and Inca ruins. You can also spot some Inca terracing. When you reach the island, you have to hike up stone-steps all the way to the top which has an arch. At this altitude, it is quite a task!!The locals here spin yarns and do knitting and weaving. I noticed the women are the ones spinning yarns and the men are the ones knitting.Bring your own food like bread, fruit, water, and candles and torch if you are staying over.Isla Amantani is further away and is another option to stay over. There are some villages and ruins, temples on both of the island's peaks Pacha Tata and Pacha Mama. On or about 15 January and first Sunday in March, there are colourful celebrations here. The locals make beautiful textiles, basketwork and stoneware.

PUNO : LAGO TITICACA / UROS FLOATING ISLANDS

by swesn

At 3,855m, Lago Titicaca is said to be the highest navigable lake in the world.Hence, the key thing to do in Puno is to hire a boat and navigate the lake. There are many tour agencies around Puno which organise trips to the lake, so you need not fret about where to rent such a boat. The most interesting place you will be brought to on the boat trip is a sample of 'floating islands' by the Uros people. These people use reeds to build boats, houses and even the foundations of their islands. Their traditional activities include fishing in the lake. Women are now waiting for tourists on some selected islands to sell some handicrafts made from... naturally... reed. The men are usually fixing nets, building or repairing boats. Some will take the tourists on the reedboat for a chance to experience how it is like. When I stepped on the island, there was a sense of insecurity as each of my step was...
