Crossing the norther border --ugh!

by melosh

I was forewarned by friends and the Lonely Planet travel book, but still I found the Peruvian/Ecuadorian border crossings a hassle. First on the way north the long distance bus I took stopped at Tumbes. I had read of a bus that would go across the border and on to Guayaquil, but somehow I could not find the station. So after walking a ways, I got on a local bus that took me to the Peruvian immigration office. This is too far from the actual border town to walk, so from there I had to take a motorized rickshaw type of taxi to the border. After walking across the border bridge, I had to take a taxi north out of the town to the Ecuadorian immigration office. I was told that I would have to return by taxi to the town bus station to get a bus to Machala and on to Guayaquil, but luckily was able to jump on a bus leaving town via the road past the immigration office. Next time I might just take...

Lima airport to downtown transfers

by melosh

The shuttle bus seems to be a thing of the past. The taxi situation has been regularized. A few years ago it was a hassle with lots of extremely rip-off high quotes and a need to fight for a fair price. Now there are two authorized companies. The Green that has posted fares (40 soles to downtown) and a desk that sees the ticket near the international exit. The other is outside the national part of the airport (not far away) and officially charges 35 soles, but offered to take me for 30 soles. Of course, you could walk out to the street and get the street price. You can pay the same amount to go to the airport especially if you have your hotel arrange the trip, but if you arrange it yourself or catch a taxi on the street it should be 20 or 25 soles.

Bus or Plane Lima to Cuzco

by melosh

One thing about travel in Peru is that map distance does not correspond well to travel time. This is due to the mountains and the conditions of the various roadways. The Lima-Cusco flight takes about an hour and costs about a hundred twenty dollars. It is probably safer and is certainly physically easier than bus travel. There are two primary land routes -- one through Ayacucho and the other through Arequipa. I have been told that the Ayucucho route has been recently paved. The Arequipa route has been the more traveled because of better and more reliable roads. There are also more buses available. Even though it covers many more miles it has in the past reliably taken less time. The quality of the buses varies and in my opinion is good enough, but this is not Mexico with a lot of very high quality buses readily available. The buses are not slow compared to the traffic unless you take a...

Jorge Chávez International Airport

by traveldave

Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is about six miles (ten kilometers) to the northwest of the city center, in the suburb of Callao. It offers service to most South American cities, North America, and Europe. The trip from the airport into the best areas of Lima pass through some rundown dirty areas, which does not give a good first impression of Peru.Airlines serving Jorge Chávez International Airport: Aerolineas Argentinas, AeroMexico, Air Canada, Air Europa, American Airlines, Avianca, Continental Airlines, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Grupo TACA, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, LACSA, LanArgentina, LanChile, LanEcuador, LanPeru, LC Busre, Peruvian Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Star Peru.

Velasco Astete International Airport

by traveldave

Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) is about two miles (four kilometers) south of Cuzco's city center. The airport only handles domestic flights within Peru. Flights into and out of Cuzco take place in the morning, as strong afternoon winds can make flying into the city hazardous.Airlines serving Velasco Astete International Airport: Aerosur, Grupo TACA, LanPeru, Peruvian Airlines, and Star Peru.

Lima Airport

by lychan

I had a great experince when I visited Peru; however, since my spanish language level is at the extreme beginner-level, I had a difficult time trying to get-around. Then, someone told me about Andina Taxi. They have English speaking drivers or a translator that arrives with the driver. Anyway, I ended up using them all the time and they took me back to the airport. You can find them at www.andinataxiairport.com

Getting to Lima first, and then to Cuzco.

by luzmawilliams

Try www.ticketbarato.com.In my experience LAN & Taca are the best, in that order. You need to check that website often during the week, because the price can drop and you don't want to miss it!.Now.... going from DC area to Lima,Peru. I found (last week) a very good deal in Copa Airlines (very good airline), I recommend to try that airline too, thru the same website. The ticket round trip was less than $300.00, excellent!!Any additional information, I'll be happy to help you. As a native Peruvian and a Certified Peru Specialist based in Pittsburgh, PA, I want to recommend the best so you can get the best from my country! ENJOY PERU, and don't forget to do a gastronomical tour in Lima. Is a MUST!

Airport taxes for intra country travel

by wrldtrvlr3341

Peru charges from $4.00 t0 $6.00 for all air travel within the country. Beware of travelling with old bills as it may hold you up at check in when paying airport taxes. Most establishments in peru are suspect of old, worn bills and normally will not accept any bills with a minor tear or that appears to worn and crumpled.

arriving Lima airport Jorge Chavez

Lima airport has been completely renovated since 2 february 2005. Modern, efficient, gates with jetways etc. Relatively smoothly passing immigration. Take care outside the terminal, chaotic due to the taxi-drivers. Best is to have your hotel meet you. Look at my Lima-transportation page with more details and pictures.Info January 2009

Taking a flight in Peru is generally safe and reliable, although one may be better than the other. The most popular route is of course Lima-Cusco, 10+ flights a day. Look at LAN (OneWorld Alliance with IB, BA, AA etc), TACA, WAYRA, AeroCondor, STAR Peru. These last 2 are all-Peruvian airlines.http://www.lan.comhttp://www.taca.comhttp://www.starperu.comAll of them have a relatively good on-time performance. Also here: one may be a little better than the other. In general all of them operate modern equipment and crew well-trained.It's a short flight, about one hour. Fares don't differ much. Around € 75-120 pp one way, depending season-day-time of dep.Bear in mind that Cusco airport is a "visual" airport only, operates only during daylight hours (roughly 6 am - 6 pm).Later in the day in the afternoons sometimes the clouds can get lower and/or the wind picks up and planes are not able to...
