Boats are the only way to travel in the Amazon.

by no1birdlady

Boats are the only way to travel on the Amazon River. We began at Iquitos and traveled upstream which is not commercial at all. I noticed that the local people travel mostly in dugout canoes but also use deeper larger boats that can have a thatched roof put over one end for shelter. There are also tugboats and barges to transport goods but most stop in Iquitos. Tourists travel in large boats, called Rapidos, to get from one Explorama Lodge to another. There are 14 seats with room in the back for luggage. The Rapidos have Explorama painted in large letters on the sides and top. I first thought it was just for advertisement but learned later from our local guide that it was for safety. Peru was stable in 1996 when I went but it wasn't that way a few years before that, so the Explorama identified this boat as a tourist boat especially from the air. I guess that was a good thing! There were...

Cruz del Sur bus

by colares

WE went from Huancayo to Lima by bus, with a company called "Cruz del Sur". The price was 45 Soles and included a warm meal. The comfort on the bus was not a comfortable as described in their broshure, but it was ok. Bus had a urinal on bord and did not take one brake on the whole 6 ,5 hours trip. They showed two films, one in english with spanish subtitels and one in spanish with english subtitels. Finalising the trip, we played BINGO for an hour or so.We were only allowed to take one peace of luggage on board, the rest was stored in the bus storge area underfloor. Baggage claim in Lima was then a little chaotic, as the the building is extremly narrow and everybody tried to get his baggage first. It took 40 minutes to distribute the luggagae to 40 passangers.

From Casma to Huarez

by cabbage69

The bus was late, so i got chatting to a Peruvian called Elias whilst we waited. He turned out to be a driver too, so we had a lot in common. He could tell me about delivering water, and I could tell him about delivering ice cream. My Spanish managed to cope with the conversations we had, but it would be nice to know some more. The bus journey turned out to be one of three halves (work that out Mathematicians!). The first leg of three hours led us through the mountains and to a small village, where we stopped for lunch. I can't remember what the maincourse was called, but parts of it tasted like sheppards pie. The second leg took us to a sort of bridge which the bus couldn't cross due to the fact that it consisted of two large tree trunks and a few crooked planks and rocks laid haphazardly over the top. So, we took our stuff off the bus and crossed the bridge to the other side, where we...

Peru Rail / Vistadome

by sweetbean

If you're planning on travelling from Cusco to Machu Picchu, I'd highly recommend taking the 4 hour train ride on the Vistadome train. The train snakes through the valleys and the farmlands and you really get to see a lot of amazing and beautiful sites. Getting out of Cusco is the hardest part because the train goes through a series of switchbacks through the poorest part of the city, but once you're out of that area, the views are quite amazing. Snacks and refreshments are also offered on board. And there are windows all around (on the ceiling too), so the views are all around you.

Moto-taxis

by SirRichard

In Iquitos there are very few cars, as there are no roads to go out, Iquitos is only communicated by air or river. So most of the taxis are motorbikes with a big seat on the back. These are cheaper, fresher and often more funny ways of transport!

Local buses

by SirRichard

Local buses are normally a risky option to move around the cities, unless you know for sure the route. In Lima there are regular lines numbered and you pay to the driver (about 30cents). There is usually a sign with the destinations in the front window, but you can also ask the driver, they use to be nice and helpful. In smaller towns this is normally more chaotic, there is a person hanging out of the bus door shouting the names of the destinations and you have to pay them, normally at the end of the ride.

LAN or TANS

by SirRichard

The main national lines are LAN and TANS Peru, though there are other minor lines such as AeroCondor, Magenta...For me, LAN is the best, though there might be a difference of 15-20% plus in price compared with TANS. TANS is not that bad, but they give you a paper bag with a muffin and InkaCola instead of the LAN sandwich and other drinks, and the seats space is smaller. When I was flying Iquitos-Lima, my TANS flight (cheaper) was supposed to leave at 17:15, while LAN flight was scheduled at 17:30. When LAN flight left (at its correct time), we the poor TANS passengers were still waiting for the gate call for our flight, and finally left with a 40 minutes delay!!

Taxi from Lima Airport into town

by MyHollyDay

The price differences in taxi fare is outrageous in Lima among other things. If you find out how much the ride should have been verses what you had just paid can stir up a rage powerful enough to light up the whole airport. The 30 minutes taxi ride from Lima airport into town(Miraflores) should cost no more than 20 soles or less than 5 usd. It would be even cheaper, 15 soles if you just walk 100 feet towards the exit (just ask one of the many securities standing around which direction is "salida")Hotel and hostels we stayed at also tried to rip us off big time by offering to arrange airport pickup and drop-off that is 3 times the normal rate. They would always tell you that it will be hard to find a taxi at these hours (when ever your flight is). The truth is taxi are lined up waiting for you at the airport at all hours. If your flight leaves at odd hours like 4am, just find a taxi on...
