Want to go to Joden-Savanna or Blaka Watra*? You'll have to cross Suriname river by the small ferry at Carolina. It was not always like that. For a short while a wooden bridge existed here. But it was destroyed during the “internal war” of 1986-89.
When we visited Joden-savanne and Blaka Watra in December 2006 the remains of the wooden bridge lay side by side with a new concrete bridge under construction. But we learned then that construction had halted because of lack of funds (read: funds disappeared).
We came again in May 2013. No trace left of the wooden bridge, but the concrete bridge looked as if it was almost finished. Yet there was a gap, two slabs missing. Local people explained what had happened. A drunken captain let his boat collide with the pillars under those slabs...
So for the foreseeable future you still have to use the ferry.
