For crossing Saramacca river between Hamburg and Uitkijk a ferry had been in operation since 1936. We intended to use this in 2006 when returning from a trip to Groningen, but then found that the ferry was 'broko' (broken, out of service). So the only thing to do was to return to Groningen and from there take the usual route to Paramaribo.
Five years later, however, we saw that a new bridge had recently been inaugurated. A billboard rejoyced: “After 6 years, finally a real bridge”. So, when you happen to pass the bridge, why not make a stop to commemorate the plight of your predecessors, and have a look around at Uitkijk.
