The open-air museum of Tjon Fo

by duke0123

On the road to New Nickerie you pass the plantation Novar. On this plantation lives Tjon Fo, an artist who has been inspired by the many coconuts. From these coconuts he makes statuettes which can be bought. On his ground Tjon Fo started an open-air museum with all kind of things he found on the beach. Some of these things are: bottles, a sewing-machine, a moped and all kind of pots and pans.Tjon Fo can tell wonderful stories so it's a pleasure to listen to him. It was very interesting to visit this place.

Silence in the center of Paramaribo

by duke0123

A very interesting place in Paramaribo is the Palm Garden. This is an oasis of rest in the middle of the city.Originally the garden was the backyard of the Presidential palace and was closed for the public for a long time. There are not may people who visit this garden but it's really worth a visit. The garden is not that big but you will find some small momuments between the huge palm trees (the so called king palms). In the garden you can sit for a while and watch birds, butterflies or lizards. It's also a good place to think or to read a book. For children there is a recreation-ground and musicians can play their music on a platform but nowadays this isn't used anymore. At this moment the garden is a meeting point for lovers during lunch-time.Furthermore it's better to avoid the garden when it's dark because of safety.

by Bgem

Albina is a small, run-down village on the Marowijne River, the border with French Guiana. With permission from the Carib Indians (and a hired canoe), it is possible to visit the nearby Galibi Nature Reserve, where Ridley, green and leatherback turtles nest in June and July. Albina has no accommodation but it may be possible to find a bed in a private house or sling a hammock in the park.

Someone designed this...

by pjallittle

Someone designed this beatifully tailored drive, it is still quite pretty today. It is a park of some kind. It actually belongs in Guyana, got mixed up because I had Suriname and Guyana pictures mixed together and this was not picked up until I began my Guyana page. It could be removed from this page if anyone objects.

All of the following pictures...

by pjallittle

All of the following pictures will give you a flavour of the older kinds of buildings and their rather similar architecture, which maximizes floor space.{p}So often in these older settled countries, the high ground with the view is where you often find the worst living circumstances. A poor man's house with a rich man's view.
