Mit-Shiv in Domburg, Suriname: Super Javan or Hindustan meal for 5 US$

by carlverschuren Written Dec 31, 2013

Delicious Indonesian and Hindustan meals and snacks to be eaten in the warung (cafeteria) or to go. Nowhere better, nowhere cheaper, nowhere fresher, homemade on the spot.

Favorite Dish: Try their fish sateh or, especially in the weekend, tahu.

    Waaggebouw: Historic setting

by tompt Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is located in one of the top 5 historic buildings of Paramaribo. It is used to be the central trading post and weighing house of the harbour. Its history dates back to the 17th century. It then was a wooden building which was lost in the great fire of 1821. It was rebuilt with stone walls of 1 meter thick. Later it was used as customs office.

Today it is a centre of art, culture and tourism. Where you can book a tour, have a drink or eat something.

The food is western style and somewhat 'upper-class' for Paramaribo standards. Prices are higher than average. But the food and the ambiance is great and you should go there at least once and enjoy.

    Favorite Dish: Pasta with shrimps.

    Mcdonalds: Mcdonalds

There's one Macdonalds in Suriname, located in Paramaribo.
My opinion is that but it would be a waste of your money (and health) to eat here.
Meals are small comparing them to American or European Mc's, and there's better and more tastefull food in Surinam, for cheaper prices.

Waterfront: very good food at the Waterfront

by Valeggua Written Nov 1, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Good Suriname food you can find at the Waterfront at the Surinam river. It's not a restaurant, but there are different stands with all kinds of food: Creole, Indonesian, Chinese, very nice and very cheap.

    Favorite Dish: "bakabana with pindasaus"

Havana Lounge: No diner here, but dancing is okay!

by Valeggua Written Nov 1, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's the only "wok-restaurant" in Suriname. It's got Beautiful interior... And a great dancing area...
But the buffet is so POOR, it would be a waste of your money.
Okay, the 55 SRD for eating can be reasonable (althoug the the choices you have are... so little! And we had some spoiled fish, disgusting!!)

And then they don't give you a menu-card for the drinks. Wich are EXPENSIVE! (8 SRD for juice is expensive in Suriname) So.. surprise. Nope, Never again.

On the other hand, the lounge and dancing area is great!!

Chi Min: Chi Min, Chinese food

Very nice Chinese specialities, and very cheap! If you can't eat all, you can take it away!
The only problem I had with this restaurant was the high airconditioning.

Favorite Dish: Fried rice with a plate of sizzling shrimps

Fa Tai: Large meals chinese style

by tompt Written Oct 23, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It is the oldest chinese restaurant in Paramaribo. The restaurant doesn't have a special chinese atmosphere, it looks like your average chinese restaurant inside. The restaurant is however located on the second floor and when you sit at the window you do have a view.

The food is great and the portions are huge. We were there with six people and we were asked to sit at a larger table (for 8) because they were afraid the food wouldn't fit on the table. And they were right.

Favorite Dish: There are many great dishes. But the shrimps with noodles were memorable.

  • Lee's Korean Restaurant: Fresh sushi on request!

by erroldebisarun Updated Mar 14, 2007

Nice Korean Restaurant in beautiful Mahonylaan "Mahoganylane" lined with giant trees.
Fish is superb, even lobster at affordable prices! Bulgogi (beef) scrumptious, fresh vegetables good. Chicken garlic plate and hot pepper soup to die for.

Easy parking, view from upstairs restaurant not so entertaining though.

Friendly staff tries well, but Surinamese service is generally not up to par.
Food compensates for that (in a lot of other Surinamese restaurants it doesn't!).

Favorite Dish: Red snapper sweet/sour. Lobster with butter. Bulgogi. Fried shrimps

The Surinamese creole dishes are like hmmm very delicious. I enjoyed the Javanese dishes which reminds me of every morning at the back of the market I'll go and buy some Dawet, when you drink one u want another. This is a photo of my daughter enjoying some too.
Other tasty foods to try are loempia, petjel, kafie, kemplang, croquel just to name a few.
After a hot day cool down do not hesitate to buy from the shave ice man a cup of shave ice with your chosen flavored syrups (argeadestroop).
For a comfortable and relaxing and enjoyable meal there's Krasnopolsky its the ideal place to dine.....it has a hotel restaurant bar and casino for the lovers of Casinos.
There is also the Torrarica International Hotel and Bar for your dining needs.

The Zeeland Coffee Beanery: Drinking coffee or tea when watching street life.

    by duke0123 Written Oct 20, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Zeeland Coffee Beanery is not a reataurant but a coffee shop where you can drink coffee, cappuccino, tea or juice and have some cake with it.
You can sit inside the shop but it's nicer to sit outside where you can watch the street life: schoolchildren having fun and passing by, shopping people, cars driving on the road, tramps asking for a cigarette and so on, and so on.

La Bastille: Chinese in South America

    by duke0123 Updated Oct 20, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you want to eat in a different ambience than, for example, The Waterside, you can go to restaurant La Bastille in Paramaribo.
In this restaurant you can eat European food but it's also possible to have some Chinese dishes.
Also special to this restaurant was that you get your food at the same time when you're here with many people. In some other restaurants it's possible you get your dish when other people already have finished their meal.

Favorite Dish: I only ate here once, so I can't say I have a favorite dish. What I can tell is that the food was really good.

The Waterside: Eating where the locals eat

    by duke0123 Written Oct 20, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

For a long time, The Waterside, a small part of the embankment of the Suriname river, is the meeting point for the local people of Paramaribo.
At this place, under the almond trees, you can eat (or drink) from the early morning till the late evening.
It's not really a restaurant but there are different stands where you can get your food. So you can get Creole food at Inez' eatcorner or chicken at Chung Kee's stand.
At the Waterside, when eating or drinking, you can talk to the local people or listen to the stories (or their displeasure) of Suriname and the politics.

Favorite Dish: One of my favourite dishes at the Waterside is the vegetarian bami and also the bakabana (baked banana with peanut sauce).
I ate the bami three times here and every time it was different but very good. When you like pepper with your food, ask for it.
Have your meal with a drink, for example the local beer: Parbo.

We'd sit on the veranda peeling shrimps at 40 degrees Celsius outside temperature. In cold and dreary Holland people would die eating such shrimps (salmonella) but not here. The shrimp are dried and used as taste enhancer and keep for years too.

Favorite Dish: Pitjil which is a pestled mixture of peanuts, tamarind, garlic, palm sugar, peppers and many many spices. Endless mixed and stamped in a mortar, makes a hard brick of fragrant pitjil. Break off a bit and mix it with boiling water to create a hot and spicy sateh (peanut) sauce.
Of course it can be bought, but this is the best. It keeps for years in or outside the fridge.
