White Beach resort

by Valeggua

Beautiful artificial beach at the Surinam River. By car it's about 25 minutes from Paramaribo.I went by bus (2 SRD) and took me an hour.Very relaxing for a daytrip, there are also apartements to stay over night.Private beach on weekdays, more crowded on Sundays, when there is live music and barbeque.

Upper Suriname

by tompt

Do go on a boattrip to upper Suriname. This area is called upper Suriname (Boven Suriname) because it is upstream the Suriname river. All transport here is done by boat, there are simply no roads in the rainforest. The boatsmen have great skill and will navigate through the rapids making it look like an attraction in an amusement park. There are plenty of tours available and they will typically go from Paramaribo by car or bus to Pokigron, the place to get on the boat. Take at least a three day tour so you can visit some villages and learn about the live of the locals. People living here are mostly descendants of the african slaves that fled here. There are two kind of villages: the villages where they believe in Christ and the villages where Winti is the faith. Winit villages are recognized by the palmleave gate at the water entrance. Ofcourse the Christian villages are recognized by their...

Galibi and seaturtles

by Valeggua

Galibi is an Carib indian village at the coast of the Atlantic. We got there from Albina with a hired canoe from one of the Carib Indians. From Februari till Augustus special tours are organised to the wild coast to see seaturtles nest.By night we took the canoe to sail to the wild coast (1 hour from the village),and there we saw hordes of giant seaturtles nesting. We watched whole night to see the Letherback nesting BTW:*pictures with flash are not allowed, so trie going to the coast in the early morning.*very little sand flies sting trough your clothes. So long sleeves, layers, pants tucked in shoes!*€200,- for this trip is a little too expensive.. Try going there with locals or book at Stinasu office.

The Central Market

by Valeggua

Paramaribo's central market is the place for lots of delicious fruits, fresh vegetables, cheap cd's, clothing, clothing, just about anything you can imagine. There's also an outdoor fishmarket and a big Maroon market where you can find anything for ceremonial and medicinal purposes (bones, sticks, leaves, feathers)...I

Brokopondo Lake

by tompt

Stay a few nights on an island in the Brokopondo Lake. It is really a good place to unwind. The water surrounding you is warm. So swimming is great. But you can also fish if you like, the lake has spots where piranha's are abundant. But there are other fish to catch too. Also make a trip by boat between the trees. This lake was formed in 1964, when a dam blocked the water in the Suriname river. About 5000 Saramak people who lives in this area had to move, because their home was vanishing in the lake. The forest died when the lake set. But the wood is extremely hard and today, 40 years later, you will see the tree tops still standing. When travelling by boat on the water keep in mind that there trees that are just under the waterlevel and you can hit them. The wood is still being harvested by divers, who go down and saw the tree at the bottom of the lake.

Jodensavanne

by tompt

The main goal of the boat trip down the Suriname river was a visit to the Jodensavanne.During the inquisition the jews fled from Spain to flourishing countries like Holland and England. From there they came on ships to Suriname to start plantations. In 1640 the first jewish settlement in this area started with growing sugar cane. When they got the right to built a synagogue and graveyard the settlement of Jodensavanne was formed. Most of the jews left the settlement and went to Paramaribo. When in 1832 most of the settlement was burnt down it was lost.In the second world war they built a prison camp here to hold people suspected of collaboration with the germans. In 1971 a plan was made to protect the remains of the Jodensavanne for the future. The trees were cleared and today you can see the graveyard and the small remains of the synagogue.

Brownsberg

by Valeggua

Brownsberg is a beautiful nature reservate in Surinam. You can see many monkeys and other fauna and flora here. You can book a trip at one of the many booking offices, or you can go by yourself, like me and my boyfriend did:We booked our cottons and bus from Brownsway to the top @ STINASU (bus: 25 SRD p.p, 3 nights cotton 11 SRD p.p)The next day we took one of the many busses at the Saramacca street, wich were going to Brownsway (25 SRD)The Sarramaccan people are very friendly and you can trust them, so it's no problem, traveling this way.At the Brownsway we took the Stinasu bus to the top.Staying at Brownsberg is fantastic! You should stay 2 or 3 days to visit all beautifull waterfalls and sights! We also saw a lot of wild animals, big cats, monkeys, some snakes and many birds! Bring good hiking shoes!

Visit French Guyana

by Valeggua

From Albina it's very easy to make a crossover to French Guyana. You just have to make sure you have an european passport or a visa. I drove for 7,50 SRD by bus to Albina (a 5 hour drive, not for elderly and children!), and took a boat to Saint Laurent. Make good appointments about the prices of the boat, it shouldn't be more then 10 SRD p.p. In Saint Laurent we searched for an hotel and stayed there for the night (French Guyana is part of French, so expensive euro's here again!)The next morning we took the boat and bus back to Paramaribo. Very nice experience we did by ourselves, whitout expensive booking offices.

Have a drink @ the famous bar 't Vat

by Valeggua

Firts thing lots of visitors do, is having a drink (or diner) at 't Vat.A very good meeting spot, live music, every now and then soccer games on big television screens. The concept of a typical duth terrace.
