A trip down the Suriname river

by tompt

The first boat trip we took was a two day trip down the Suriname river to see the Jodensavanne, the first jewish settlement in Suriname now overtaken by the rainforest. This part of the river is broad and doesn't have dangerous rapids. The boat had a roof and when it started to rain we could even lower some screens along the boat to keep it dry inside. The roof was great because otherwise our tender european skin would have been burning red after a day on the river. The first day we cruised south stopping at the small village of Domburg for some food. (As you will learn soon enough, everything in Suriname is about food. You will have to eat and eat until you go home.) On our way south we saw a sloth, some water-birds and some boys catching lizards. Otherwise it was green , green, green along the banks of the river. Even the old abandoned ships were taken over by the forest. A quick stop at...

Fort Nieuw Amsterdam

by tompt

At the other side of the river in the Commewijne district , where the Commewijne river and the Suriname river come together, there is another fort. It is fort Nieuw Amsterdam. The fort was built in the 18th century to protect the plantations. When the plantations were no longer profitable most of them closed. And the fort lost its defending position. The district government used the buildings from 1907. Later a part was used as prison. The prison closed in 1982. Today the fort is an open air museum. You can see some old buildings, and have a look in the cell block.

Fort Zeelandia

by tompt

One of the remains of the Dutch settlers is Fort Zeelandia, named after the dutch province Zeeland. It was first a fort from the English rulers. When in 1667 the Dutch came they strengthened the fort which was used for their defence until a new fort was built at the opposite of the river somewhat north, closer to the mouth of the river. This fort was called fort Amsterdam.Fort Zeelandia then was used as barracks for the army. Later some parts were used as a prison. After a renovation in 1967 the Suriname museum was housed here. During the civil war it was used as barracks again. With a dark spot in its history when 15 members of the opposition where killed in the courtyard.Today the museum is housed here again. An interesting visit will set you back only a few dollars.

Flora and Fauna

by ATLC

Make a 2 or 3 day trip to the Brownsberg Nature Reserve, where you can hike to waterfalls and vantage points with views of the Brokopondo Reservoir and the extensive green jungle. The lush vegetation and the different kinds of butterflies and birds make your forest hike an experience you will not easily forget.

upper suriname river tour

by hanspeter_W.

Along the upper stream of the Suriname river, approximately 200 km south of Paramaribo, you will meet the Saramaccan Maroons and their culture. We depart in the early morning by bus on the Afobaka road passed the fascinating, mystical forest with its unique tropical flora. At approximately 160 km from Paramaribo lies Atjoni where we will continue our trip by dug-out canoe further into the interior across rapids and passed Saramaccan villages along the Upper Suriname river. A unique experience to see the Saramaccan boat men maneuver between the rocks and swirling waters with expertise. We sleep in an authentic lodge in Abenaston village, in traditional huts and sometimes in hammocks depending on the duration of the tour (more than 3 days). We take walks into the village to meet the hospitable, friendly villagers. Cultural performances at night with singing and dancing, walks into the...

At a height of 500 meters on the rainforest, on the Mazaroni plateau, lies Brownsberg Nature Park in de midst of a 6000 acres nature reserve, approximately 130 km south from Paramaribo. On the plateau, you can enjoy a magnificent over the Van Blommenstein hydro lake. Walking paths take you through the tropical rainforest to small but attractive waterfalls and offer you unexpected panoramas over the far-stretching interior.

Jodensavanna

by worldtraveler55

JodensavannaOn the rightside of the Suriname river lies the Jodensavanna. The old Jewish site in the jungle of Suriname, is the first token of the presence of Jewish people in the New World. The site mainly consists of the remnants of a synagogue and 2 beautiful cemeteries, but buried under the jungle lie the remnants of the old Jewish village that once flourished there, yet to be surveyed and excavated.During the 1999 historical survey, it was recognized that the old gravestones are deteriorating quickly and that the preservation of the old Jewish cemeteries is the most urgent thing to do.

Chattillion

by worldtraveler55

ChattillionOn the rightside bank of the Suriname river lies Chattillion. It was a colony for leprous persons. The late Dutch missionary Petrus Donders also known as Peerke Donders worked here in 19th century. When he died in 1887 he was buried at the local cemetery. In 1900 his body was moved to the St. Petrus and Paulus Cathedral and in 1982 pope John Paul II declared him blessed.Nowadays there is not much left; it's taken over by the jungle, but it's a nice way to experience a jungle.
