Brownsberg Naturepark

by grets

Brownsberg is named afetr John Brown, a goldminer who operated in this area in 1810. The park was established in 1969 and is managed by STINASA, the Foundation for Nature Conservation in Suriname.Brownsberg is fairly easily accessible from Paramaribo by car, lying 130km south, by a muddy dirt track, fairly steep in places.Brownsberg is a paradise for naturelovers. Over 200 species of birds are found here, although they are more often heard rather than seen. Covered by neotropical rainforest, Brownsberg is the northern outpost for several plant and animal species. Although we did not encounter all of these, deer, rabbits, squirrels, monkeys and sloths are found in this forest. One of the most enjoyable activity to partake in during your visit to Brownsberg is trekking on the many well-marked paths.

Commewijne Plantations

by grets

Prior to the abolishing of slavery in 1863, Commewijne was home to soem 60 plantations, mainly sugar. Once the plantation would no longer have access to cheap labour, they realised that they would be unable to continue with their large scale cultivation of the area, and many sold chunks of land to the freed slaves. Now only a handful of plantations remain. The mansions were built on stilt for several reasons:1. To remain elevated and above the workers.2. To keep the dwelling cool.3. To prevent vermin from entering the house.

New Amsterdam Fort and Open Air Museum

by grets

Across the river from Paramaribo, lies the open air museum held within New Amstedam Fort. Construction of the fort was started in 1734, and it took 15 years to complete.Set in 15 acres of land, it is a pentagonal shape and the only clay-wall fort in the Caribbean. 350 slaves tolled to construct the fort. The fort has never fired a short and ceased being a defensive stronghold in 1907. In 1968 the fort was turned into an open air museum. In the grounds of the fort / museum are found a few rusting hulks of German vehicles from the war, the powdre room, a sugar burner and a sluice. The fort was the first prison in Surinam, and we were shown the cells where one of our party was shackled to show how the slaves would work with their hands tied to their feet, constantly stooped! Those who were willing, could be (temporarily) locked in the soltary confinement cell. Not me!In a shed in the museum...

Paramaribo

by grets

Paramaribo, the capital of Surinam and its largest city, is known as the wooden city of the Caribbean. Some of the buildings were destroyed by fires in 1821 and 1832, but many white-painted colonial buildings remain. The inner city has been placed on the UNESCO “World Heritage” list of historical monuments since 2002, and the buildings are slowly being restored to their former glory. Around 250,000 people live in Paramaribo, which is located on the Surinam River, ca 10m inland from the Atlantic Ocean. In 1630 the area was settled by the British and became the capital of the British colony in 1650. In 1667 it was ceded to Dutch colonial rule. The current inhabitants and mainly of Asian, African, indigenous or Dutch descent. The name Paramaribo is derived from 'Paramurubo,' the name of an old Arrawak village, which means 'city of parwa blossoms.Attractions include Fort Zeelandia,...

Excursion to the outskirts plantations in Paramari

by SpaniardPolo

FIETSEN-IN SURINAME (Suriname by bicycle) is a asmall bussiness well run by Priscilla & Urbian in Paramaribo. They may arrange you several tours at the surroundings of the city or even to other places of the country. All depends on the number of people registered for each journey.I made alone with Priscila a halfa day bicycle tour to the outskirts of Paramaribo to the other side of Suriname River. The ride is quiet once you cross the busiest part of the town and you get into a quiet countryside life. One quietly may enjoy from their bike of the landscape, see some monkeys playing like kids.Every farmer you cross along the way greet you. You could think you are in Asia (Java, Vietnam....).Priscilla is gonna carry you to visit some former plantations from an other time. You can imagine the way of life of those people working there. There some small groups of villages where peasants cultivate...

Fort Zeelandia

by duke0123

One of the most historical buildings of Paramaribo is Fort Zeelandia. The fort was founded by the British but in 1667 the fort fell into the hands of the Netherlands.Since 1967 several renovations took place and till 1982 the Suriname Museum was accommodated in the fort. In this year the museum was chasen away by the national army which made the fort its head quarter.A dramatic tragedy took place on the inner court of the fort: fifteen opponents of the military regime were shot down.Since 1995 the fort was rebuilt again and the Suriname Museum is accommodated in the fort again. The inner court of the pentagonal fort can be entered by a gate. The several buildings around this court were used as prison and storage space. Interesting is the pharmacy from the late nineteenth century.Outside the fort there is a statue of a former queen of The Netherlands: Wilhelmina. The fort is very...

The Jodensavanne

by duke0123

The Jodensavanne is one of the first colonial settlements in Suriname. This settlement was a safe place for the jews coming from Spain and Portugal. Three ages ago they had to excape from these countries because of persecutions. For more than 100 years the savanne is a desolated place. The silent witnesses are the ruins from a synagogue, cemeteries and a well.

The Sintia Dan Falls

by duke0123

A visit to Sintia Dan is a must do. An excursion to this part of Suriname is organised by Danpaati Eco Lodges, a very nice place to stay.Very special to the excursion to Sintia Dan is the boat-trip on the Suriname river. During this trip you're surrounded by water and the beautiful rainforest. Now and then a small village, people washing their clothes and themselves in the river, children playing in the river and then... no villages anymore... just rainforest.During the trip there are several rapids where you have to go out of the boat, getting wet clothes when drawing or pushing the boat to go further. At Sintia Dan there is a beautiful waterfall and not far away from these falls you can have walk in the rainforest. Sleeping here can be done in a hammoch which is a special experience when you've never done this.
