The beauty around Brownsberg

by duke0123

When you're in Suriname you really have to go to Brownsberg because this is one of the highlights of this country. On the 500 meter high Mazaroni-plateau you have a beautiful view over the scenery. The top is a good starting point for a number of walks in the tropical rainforest. For example you can take a walk to the Leo-falls, what I did, or to the Irene falls. You don't see that many wild animals but when you're going for a walk in the early morning there is a chance to see deers, konkoni's (a hare specie) or pakira's (wood-pig).Besides these animals there are a lot of birds so when you like them this is a good place to be.When you decide to walk here it's not wrong to wear good walking/hiking shoes.

Nickerie

by ATLC

Make a trip to the coastal areas, such as Nickerie, with its 45.000 inhabitants the second biggest city in Suriname, located on the eastern banks of the Corentyne River near the western border.Fancy moving a city!Nieuw Nickerie is the capital of the district Nickerie and Suriname's second largest city. The current location of the city is its third. The first two locations were on the west bank of the Corantijn river. The city had to be moved in 1870 and 1879 because of erosion. The city is now protected by a sea wall. Photo is from the internet

Visit Amerindians

by ATLC

Make a four or five-day tour to Palumeu. Howlers and birds announce daybreak. Enjoy the way of life of the Upper-River Amerindian communities (Trio, Wayana and Akurio) together with the unspoilt nature.

Endangered bird species

by ATLC

The Nature Reserve at the Coppename River Mouth and the multi-management area Bigi Pan are also worth visiting. You will see all kinds of endangered water-birds and migratory birds, such as the red ibis, storks and herons.

Boat trip

by ATLC

Combine a wonderful boat trip, with swimming and sunning and some historic learning, culture and adventure on a Cassipora river cruise. You will stop at different villages and historic sites, such as Groot Chattillon, Plantage Toevlugt, Kordonpad, Hey Santi sandbank, Cassipora, Domburg, Paranam and Jodensavanne.

Jungle tour

by ATLC

It is possible to make an adventurous jungle trip in dugout canoe to the Amerindian and Maroon communities, deep in the interior where flora and fauna are untouched by man. The Amerindians and Maroons have maintained their culture and traditional way of life for centuries, which you can experience first hand.

A walk through the capitol...

by ATLC

A walk through the capitol ParamariboUnfortunately I don't have a great many pictures of Suriname. The website mentioned here takes you on a virtual walk through Paramaribo.I remember it as as bustling, colourful city. In fact, when I was in Madagascar it reminded me a lot of Suriname. In both countries many races are joined in one society.
