everyone is going to give you a huge list of places to visit, so you'll have to decide which works best for what activities you have planned. i'm going to focus on major cities, where you will find museums, nightlife, culture, food and one tip per city that you may not have heard of. brazil--- you MUST go to rio. take a boat excursion to itacuruca (1.5 hr bus ride south) to go diving (as in jumping off a boat after a few drinks) and have an entire day to skip around the islands and have a once-in-a-lifetime lunch on a deserted island. you can look up tours online (and these are just a few based on a basic google...
I really don't know about the situation in Bs As, but since you've had no replies let me offer this. In Rio, the more respectable schools (like the Cultura Inglesa, where my wife teaches) demand a degree. They also demand proper visa status (ie tourists need not apply). In the UK, there are highly respectable intensive one-month TEFL courses, such as the one she did at International House, London, and I'm sure there must be similar ones in the States: such a course would certainly be an advantage to you. Be advised that teachers in Latin America are disgracefully badly paid (here, not much more than US$7 per hour). She certainly couldn't survive on her salary, and really only continues for the (good) health plan.
Hello, I noticed you are planing to visit S. America, I would like to invite you Visit Central Jungle of Peru to be with Ashaninka indigenous people whom are opens theirs arms and welcome you. Hey everyone, Thanks for your reponses. It looks like Machu Pichu will be do-able but maybe not the most pleasant experience, yet i guess you can never know thanks to global warming/el nino. Everyone's advice for Argentina and Brazil is good - we're only looking for things to do for perhaps a week so we might look at things like Ouro Preto, that are close to Buenos Aires and Rio!Thanks again guys,Safe Travels!Max
Hi! I'll tell you what is worthwhile doing in a 2-3 months trip in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Brazil in case you have only 2 month for a small loop around. The final choice is yours. From Lima you can go to Nazca. There take a small plane to see the mysterious designs from above. Then to Arequipa, a beautiful city. The perfect remains of a young girl mummified, are kept there. Take a 3 day tour to the high Andes to see mountain villages and the "Passage of the Condors" Interesting! You can skip Arequipa, though. Then go to Cusco. There is no complete travel to Peru without visiting Cusco. It has its own character. Then go to Machu Picchu. Take your time there. It's magic!!! After this, go towards the Bolivian borders in Puno. You can stop there to see Uros Islands. Interesting! Next get into Bolivia and stay on the banks of Titicaca Lake. Stay in Copacambana to visit Isla del Sol! Then go...

You mentioned Colombia. When I travelled around South America for 6 months, I met many people who went to Colombia and completely changed their itinery as a result. It's a wonderful place. All the major cities are very safe. Now, is the time to go, before it becomes like the rest of South America. I can't recommend it enough. Personally, I live in Medellin, though you should definately check out the northern coast, i.e. Cartagena. Here are some useful links and photos on Medellin: http://www.apartments-medellin.com/About_Medellin.htmlThanks

a lively little Bordertown, just acros the Rio del la Plata and the argentine Capital Buenos Aires Colonia is well worth the trip by normal ferry, takes 3 hours or by fast boat and 45min. have a look at andal13 VT page for the newest ferry schedualsColonia became the first european settlement by the Portugues in 1580 the Spanish arrived much later, but began imidiatly to fight over the strategically interesting settlement. have a look at my Uruguay page, there is more info..from Colonia it is ca 200km to Montevideo, Uruguays Capital...very well served by coaches

Peru is a magical destination if only to see Machu Picchu but there is a lot more to this great country than ruins. The Cordillera Blanca offers some of the finest mountain scenery in the world and add to that beautiful cities like Arequipa and Cuzco, and the cuisine of Lima, and you have a place not to be missed.

Bolivia is a land of varied terrains and offers them to the adventurous traveler safely at very affordable prices. Much feared as a dangerous destination like neighbor Peru, we found this fascinating country full of friendly helpful people.
