Every bus terminal you arrive to in South America will have a gaggle of Hostel owners ready to whisk you off to their abodes.When you get off your bus, no matter what time of day or night they will be there. They will all want to speak to you at once.This is both good and bad.Good : because you always have somewhere to stayBad : They all know you are tired and delirious and will try to over charge you. The best way to deal with them is to try to ignore them and tell them you already have somewhere to stay.This is not a deterent, this will simply get them to reduce their price to something more realistic. The next thing to do is to listen in to other squabbles going on around you and try to work out what the most expensive and the most cheap accomodation on offer is....Try and work out what you need at the accomodation like : Kitchen, hot water, food, laundry, internet, etc and question...
