As Andrea and I were walking around town, we kept seeing these guys dressed up as soldiers marching around Plaza Mayor (perhaps demonstrating the military past?). You might notice them when you first cross the bridge and enter the historic district. Since we didn't take any guided tour, I'm not exactly sure who they were depicting.

We got on the air-conditioned bus nº 45 and the tour was under way. The first thing I noticed was our guide spoke a very different dialect of Spanish, even different from the Argentine dialect, that more closely resembled Portuguese. For example the "ll" spelling is normally pronounced "y" in Spanish, but in Uruguay, it is pronounced "ch". I know both languages right well, but it didn't help that the ol' boy spoke it like a fertilizer salesman with a mouthful of merchandise. As a result, I didn't understand a lot of what he was saying. I felt so stupid. The only thing I could get out of the whole thing was that Colonia del Sacramento was the first European settlement in what is now Uruguay by the King of Portugal. The Portuguese settled it for awhile, then the Spanish decided they wanted it, they fought over it, the Spanish won it, it was a part of Argentina for a few years, and then it became Uruguay.

  • A small craft market with extremely cheap prices. A great place to shop.

Colonia, like all old Spanish towns, has a classic mission style Colonial Cathedral.

Every Latin city has its own Plaza de Armas. The one in Colonia is much more preserved in the style one would imagine in the 17th century.

The best attraction of Colonia was simply to walk the streets of the old town and experience the colonial architecture. Most of the historic buildings now contain either museum, souvenir shops and restaurants.

Well, for those who like lighthouses, check it out... it is also nice and cool ... breezes off the Rio de le Plata (which my friend nicknamed Rio de Cappuccino because of the colour)

We were looking for a nice restaurant, when we spotted this brightly pink painted place not far from the tourist office and right by the city gate. Upon entering we were welcomed by a French gentleman who spoke perfect English and he insisted that we make a tour of the house and had great pride in explaining to us that this use to be the house of pleasure many years ago. Upstairs he has a room with letters/clothes and other items which belonged to these ladies.
