Since you are just a few km away from La Mansa(quiet beach) in Punta del Este, you must see the hand. The famous landmark known as "The Hand in the Sand" was made in 1982. We just had to go there to say we had been there, done that.
The beach was very quiet the day we were there but it was March and summer season was over.

Casa Pueblo has the workshop of Carlos Paez Vilaro. You can see a collection of his paintings, sculptures, and pottery. You are asked to first go to see a film on his life. It is very interesting.
There is also a bar in the museum. Everyone gets a drink and goes out to the balcony to watch the sunset.

Gorlero is the main street in th epeninsula and the place where the commercial activity concentrates and teenagers gather in the evenings.

It has only ten blocks full of restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and entertainment.

It's really tough to find a parking place at late hours. You'd better leave the car in any secondary street and walk to Gorlero.

After the Plaza Artigas where the Feria is located, Gorlero becomes less crowded and easier to drive through.

This bridge, which has a unique ondulating construction and is a landmark in Punta del Este, crosses over the Maldonado River as a gate to the La Barra area.

It has 235 mts. and was created by Lionel Viera. It was opened in 1965 after two failed attempts of other bridges that didn't whitstand the effect of the sea.

By the end of 1999 a new twin bridge was inaugurated, 25 mts. apart from the original one, to alliviate the heavy traffic during the summer months.

This street market, that has been operating on Plaza Artigas for 30 years, is a must for visitors to Punta del Este.

It has approximately 200 stands offering the most varied articles like souvenirs, wool garments, leather articles, paintings, jewellery and wood sculptures. During the summer evenings it is very crowded.

The beaches are, of course, the main attraction of punta's mornings and afternoons. The bay is divided in two parts that have a paricularity, one side of the bay the water is rougher than the other side, this part is called the Playa Brava, the other side is calmer, more realxed, thats why it's called Playa Mansa (quiet beach).
The most popular beach is called La Olla and its near the main street, Gorlero.
No matter what beach you prefer you will be sorounded of beautiful women, not to bad huh?

    Faro de Punta del Este

Built in 1860, it was first installed at the Isla de los Lobos in 1858 but the local fishermen insisted that the light was bothering the sea wolves and so it was moved to the peninsula.

It has a height of 44 mts, lighting up to 11 miles and a 43,000 candels of light intensity. It flashes twice every 8 seconds. Volcanic ashes brought from Italy were used for its construction. It was rebuilt in 1923.

The area is one of the quietest and with the most incredible view in Punta del Este.

The Conrad Hotel is without a doubt the best place to stay in Punta Del Este, it is also very expensive, but if you can't stay here you should visit it anyway. Inside the hotel there is a very exclusive Casino, a few restaurants, some shops and a Nightclub

The backbone of dowtown Punta del Este is the Gorlero Street. It is lined by tall buildings, restaurants, shops, video games arcades and ice cream stores. As you get deeper into the peninsula, Gorlero turns quieter and skycrapers turn into nice medium sized homes that were built in around the lighthouse when the town established in the early 20th century.

Gorlero is where all the action is for youngsters at nights. They fill the streets in mobs chatting and wandering around for hours.

The sidewalk that borders all the peninsula going through the marina is a must see. Runners and bikers enjoy this by the sea circuit every afternoon where you can enjoy incredible sunsets.

Downtown is not my suggested part of Punta del Este to stay but certainly the most centric if you only come for a few days.

    Brava beach at Jose Ignacio
    by Frisbeeace
The best beach in my opinion is the Brava in Jose Ignacio, located about 35 kms east of PDE and a short drive from La Barra. The place and the people there are just incredible. It is somehow crowded during January so you'd better arrive before 1pm to park your car close to the only beach access it has. Have lunch at La Huella, just as the beach's entrance.
